The Turing AI Global Fellowships are the UK's instrument for recruiting internationally established AI researchers rather than funding those already in the country, and the award size reflects that recruitment purpose: up to GBP 4,500,000 each, roughly USD 5,850,000, across up to five fellowships from a GBP 24,500,000 fund.
The scheme targets research into AI at a fundamental, foundational or theoretical level, as well as work at the interfaces between AI and other disciplines where novel methodologies advance core understanding of AI itself - a framing that favors researchers building new theory or methods over those applying existing techniques to a domain. Two eligibility constraints define who can realistically apply.
The applicant must have been based outside the UK for at least 24 months prior to applying, which makes this a genuine relocation scheme rather than a route for UK-based researchers to secure large grants.
And the host organisation must be a UK institution that is UKRI-eligible, on the Global Talent visa approved list, and able to demonstrate at least GBP 25,000,000 of active funding in AI research - a threshold that narrows viable hosts to a small set of major UK AI centres, so identifying and securing a host is the first practical step, not a formality to complete after the science is written.
Fellowships run up to five years at a minimum of 50 percent FTE, with successful fellows expected to start by 1 February 2027. This round is closed: the expression of interest survey was due 9 January 2026 and applications closed 12 March 2026.
Given the scheme's role in UK AI strategy and its recurring pattern, internationally based AI researchers with foundational research programmes should watch for the next EoI window and begin host conversations well before it opens, since the host requirements cannot be satisfied quickly.
