The European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant offers up to €3. 5 million to support exceptional Principal Investigators in pursuing ambitious and high-impact research projects across all fields. What is the ERC Advanced Grant?
The ERC Advanced Grant is a prestigious funding opportunity under the Horizon Europe framework, tailored for established research leaders aiming to explore novel scientific approaches. These grants provide long-term support for high-risk, high-gain projects with the potential to drive major breakthroughs.
Applicants—referred to as Principal Investigators (PIs)—must be active, leading researchers with a strong track record of significant achievements in the last 10 years.
While there are no specific academic qualifications required, applicants must demonstrate: Ground-breaking contributions in their field Leadership in conducting independent research Open to all fields of research (“bottom-up” approach) No predefined thematic priorities Must be hosted at a public or private institution located in an EU Member State or Horizon Europe-associated country Host Institution Requirements The host institution (HI) must support the PI’s autonomy and provide the necessary infrastructure and environment to conduct the research.
The PI does not have to be employed by the HI at the time of application, but mutual commitment is essential if awarded. Projects are led by a single PI but may include team members from any country, including non-European partners. Up to €2.
5 million for a maximum of 5 years An additional €1 million may be granted for: Start-up costs (if relocating from a non-EU/associated country) Purchase of major equipment Access to large facilities Experimental or field work Covers up to 100% of eligible direct research costs Additional 25% overhead for indirect costs Implemented as a lump sum pilot (details available in Q&A on lump sums) Proposals must be submitted during open ERC Calls via the EU Funding & Tenders Portal Applications must include: Detailed research proposal Evaluated solely on scientific excellence , applied to both PI and project International peer reviewers assess proposals based on: Scientific excellence of the PI Ambition, feasibility, and originality of the proposed project Need Insights on Past Projects?
