PROFILE: Established by community leaders in 1989, the East Texas Communities Foundation is based in Tyler, Texas. Early organizers were Isadore Roosth, Norman Shtofman, “Dub” Riter, and the United Way of Tyler/Smith County.
In 1997, the directors made financial commitments to hire a full-time staff. Foundation areas of interest include community, libraries, environment, nursing, music, and education. Grants for Community Development There are several funds at the foundation that grant seekers can apply to for grants.
Tyler Library Foundation Fund makes grants by invitation-only. It supports public libraries in Smith County and Smith County Area Libraries Together. Eligible uses include collection additions, new projects and improvements to existing projects; facility maintenance and furniture are discouraged.
Edwin A. “Blue” and Janice Owen Miller Charitable Fund supports charities benefiting Henderson County. Eligible areas include education, health, human services, environment and the arts.
It discourages requests for general operating support and those that exceed $10,000. John Reagan Harris Community Fund supports projects benefiting Center, Texas, including civic, religious, charitable, scientific, literary and educational projects. Applicants must be nonprofits or governmental units, and requests over $10,000 are discouraged.
Betty and Roy Erickson Charitable Fund for Nursing supports nursing education in East Texas, including special projects, equipment, technology and supplies. Eligible applicants are public colleges or universities, or private nonprofit institutions, located in a defined list of East Texas counties. Evans-Merrick Music Grants Fund supports traditional and classical music activities in East Texas.
Programs must be free of required admission and publicly available. Grants are small, and it considers requests up to $1,000. Mrs. A.
D. Francis Endowment Fund supports capacity-building for public charities in the Winnsboro area, including new projects and enhancements to existing projects and programs. T.
J. and LaVerne Plunkett Foundation Grant supports organizations serving Cherokee, Gregg, Nacogdoches, Panola and Rusk counties, with a preference for Rusk County. Eligible areas include arts and culture, education and job training, health and human services, Christian ministries, children and youth programs, animal welfare and environmental concerns.
