Fundación Casa Wabi is a non-profit, civil association that fosters an exchange between contemporary art and local communities in three locations: Puerto Escondido, Mexico City, and Tokio. Our name originates from the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-Sabi, which seeks beauty and harmony in the simple, the imperfect and the unconventional.
Our mision is focused on forging social development through the arts, which we carry out through five key programs: residencies, exhibitions, clay, films, and mobile library. Casa Wabi is located on the Pacific coast, 30 minutes from the Puerto Escondido airport, Oaxaca. Set between the mountains and the sea, our headquarters have been designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando and under the initiative of Mexican artist Bosco Sodi.
Our facilities include a multipurpose palapa, six separate bedrooms, two closed studios and six open studios, a screening room, / auditorium, a 450 m² exhibition gallery and various workspaces that make it an ideal place to recharge and interact with other artists. Residencies and Community Projects The foundation currently operates two residency programs, Casa Wabi in Oaxaca and Casa Nano in Tokyo.
Casa Wabi has a 460 m² exhibition space that allows for the mounting of pieces of various formats. The film program aims to facilitate a constructive approach to film production through the screening of national and international films, as well as the organization of workshops and events that promote audiovisual media as a fundamental means of expression today.
The clay workshop is aimed at children in elementary and middle schools in the surrounding communities. Its principal objective is to promote a comprehensive reevaluation of the importance and organic nobility of clay, given that it alludes to the local culture and economy. The Mobile Library of the Coast is a program developed in conjunction with Fundación Alfredo Harp Helú Oaxaca.
The Project Site is situated directly facing the south pacific ocean, sharing 550 meters of coastline with only the breathtaking beach.

The program encourages host institutions to adapt these pre-existing projects meaningfully for their own local contexts through new public programming, collaborations, or modified interpretive materials. The foundation aims to foster resource-sharing, sustainability, and curatorial collaboration. Successful applicants may also indicate interest in the 'Climate Action for Curators' program for additional coaching and funding to embed climate consciousness into their projects. Small Project Grants (North Carolina Humanities Council) is sponsored by North Carolina Humanities Council. These grants support public humanities projects such as lecture/discussion series, exhibitions, presentations, and workshops. While not exclusively for literacy, projects that use humanities disciplines to explore literature, reading, and storytelling could be eligible. The Council encourages programs which serve educators, veterans, and underserved communities in North Carolina.
