$7M Fund Looking For Humane Fish Slaughter Technologies - Aquaculture North America $7M fund looking for humane fish slaughter technologies By Aquaculture North America Staff U.S.-based philanthropic funder Coefficient Giving has opened a request for proposals (RFP) to fund technologies and prototypes that would reduce fish suffering during capture and slaughter.
The organization’s Farm Animal Welfare Fund expects to dole out US$7 million to the “most promising” projects, and has reserve funds for “exceptional proposals,” Coefficient Giving said in a news release. “Fish experience significant suffering during slaughter, and current solutions only reach a fraction of them,” Lewis Bollard, managing director of Coefficient’s Farm Animal Welfare Fund, said in the release.
“But we believe this is a solvable engineering challenge, and we’re eager to fund talented teams who can make humane stunning practical at scale. ” The RFP is looking for practical engineering solutions to solve the current stunning technology challenges, such as anatomy variances, failure modes, and operational constraints. Applications are open until July 1.
Coefficient Giving said it estimates of the more than 100 billion farmed fish slaughtered each year, approximately 0. 5 per cent of them, primarily salmon, are reliably stunned in the process. Wild-caught fish experience even worse conditions, the funder said in the release.
