This program will make approximately $5 million in funding available to fire departments across the Commonwealth for the enhancement of firefighter safety. Applications are **due on February 19, 2026 at 5:00 PM**.

dfs-tm-grants@mass. gov with any questions. ## Student Awareness of Fire Education Grant Program The Student Awareness of Fire Education (SAFE) grant program provides resources for fire departments to teach fire safety education in schools.
The Student Awareness of Fire Education (SAFE) program provides grants to local fire departments to teach fire and life safety to children in schools. The program teaches students to recognize the dangers of fire and the fire hazards of tobacco products through 23 key fire safety behaviors taught in developmentally appropriate ways.
Fire and life safety is easy to combine with math, science, language arts and health or physical education lessons, making it easy to collaborate with school teachers. Since the SAFE program began in 1996, child fire deaths have dropped significantly in Massachusetts. Massachusetts recently went more than two and a half years without losing a child to fire.
* SAFE and Senior SAFE Mission Statements ## Senior SAFE Grant Program Senior SAFE is a grant program for fire departments to teach fire safety to seniors. Seniors have a high risk of dying in a fire. Fire and burns risks for seniors include: cooking, smoking, home oxygen use, and electrical and heating dangers.
Senior SAFE also aims to improve safety in senior housing. Programs include: * smoke and carbon monoxide alarm installation * testing and replacing batteries * installation of house numbers * heating limiting devices on stoves * in-hood stove fire extinguishers Education is key to improving the safety of seniors at home. Senior SAFE creates partnerships between agencies that serve seniors and fire departments.
Together, these agencies collaborate on local fire and life safety education programs. * SAFE and Senior SAFE Mission Statements ## FEMA Fire Safety Grants FEMA fire safety grants fund critically needed resources to equip and train emergency personnel, enhance efficiencies and support community resilience.
**FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program:**Since 2001, Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) have helped firefighters and other first responders obtain critically needed resources necessary for protecting the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards. **FEMA Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response Grant Program:**Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grants fund fire departments and volunteer firefighter interest organizations directly to help them increase capacity in their communities. * FEMA Fire safety grants ## New England SFPE Fire Service Grant Program Through the New England Chapter of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers Fire Service Grant Program, fire departments in the New England region can apply for funding to support a wide array of fire prevention, preparedness and control efforts.
