The Transforming Power Fund (TPF) is a Detroit-based social justice fund committed to transformative systems change. TPF emerged from a city-wide effort initiated by Detroit’s social justice community to increase foundation resources for social justice movements and to demonstrate a more equitable approach to traditional philanthropy.

TPF provides funding, training, and other resources for local projects that address the root causes of systemic problems and advance holistic solutions. TPF prioritizes community governance, donor organizing, and shared values to model a more equitable approach to philanthropy.

TPF embodies the shared values of inclusion, equity, justice (racial, economic, gender, disability, and environmental), personal transformation, structural transformation, intergenerational relationships, cooperation, collaboration, continuous learning, creativity, audacity, healing, and working across boundaries. The Transforming Power Fund is launching the Food, Water, and Utilities Security Grant.

This is a one-year grant focused on food, water, and energy security in Detroit, Highland Park, and Hamtramck, Michigan. TPF will provide one-time grants of $5,000 – $25,000 to Detroit-, Highland Park-, and Hamtramck-based organizations seeking to organize impacted residents to address food, water, and utility security issues and/or provide emergency assistance to residents in those communities .

These funds may be used for operating costs, emergency food, water, and utility assistance for residents in these communities, as well as community organizing to address public policy issues related to food, water, and energy security for all.

Organizations that apply for this funding must demonstrate their commitment to community-driven solutions that engage, empower, and benefit communities impacted by food scarcity, water safety and affordability, and energy justice. Proposals must pursue one or more of the following objectives: Preserve or enhance grassroots community organizations’ capacity to deliver emergency food, water, or utility assistance to residents.

Provide emergency assistance to residents who need food or are in danger of water or utility shutoffs. Raise community awareness of the disproportionate impacts of the government shutdown and budget cuts on vulnerable populations (e.g., clean, safe, and affordable water, feeding programs and food benefits, healthcare benefits, and energy assistance programs). Organize and mobilize residents to better advocate for their basic needs.

To be eligible for Transforming Power Fund grants an organization or project must: Be an organized group of people: Nonprofit with 501(c)3 as determined by the IRS Have a budget of no more than $350,000 Federally recognized American Indian tribal government or agency Fiscally sponsored by 501(c)3 organizations or by federally recognized tribal governments Be led by people who are most directly affected by the problems that the organization or project is addressing Carry out its work in Detroit, Highland Park, or Hamtramck, Michigan.
