Forward Turn is a youth-led, charitable grantmaking program that takes a “forward turn” to benefit communities in Loudoun and Fauquier counties. Student members of the Loudoun County Youth Advisory Council review grant applications submitted by youth who often work in partnership with local nonprofits, schools, or other organizations. Funding is provided by the S.
Murray and Mary H. C. Rust Student Philanthropy Project Endowment Fund of the Community Foundation.
“I am so grateful for the opportunity I had to shape the future of youth involvement in my community through the Forward Turn Program,” said Aditi Giri, a student at Broad Run High School. “I received valuable insight into the grantmaking process, and got to learn about the inspirational ways that Loudoun and Fauquier County youth are giving back.
” After learning about the grant proposal process, reviewing applications, and participating in presentations from youth applicants, the Forward Turn youth-led grant review committee recommended the following grants for the 2026 Forward Turn grant cycle: $1,000 to Blue Ridge Care (formerly Blue Ridge Hospice) to support bereaved youth attending Camp Kaleidoscope grief camp at Oak Spring Garden Foundation $1,500 to Dulles South Food Pantry to support increased Backpack Buddies summer food bags to combat youth food insecurity in Loudoun $1,230 to Sustainability Matters to support the W&OD Corridor Ashburn Meadows Project and Engaging Youth Through Green Spaces $500 to Ryan Bartel Foundation to support developing and launching a mobile application for teen mental health “Working on community grant making through Forward Turn was an amazing, eye-opening experience,” said Justin Goodhart, a student at Loudoun County High School.
“I learned the detailed work that transforms great ideas into meaningful action. Behind every application are real people and important causes, and every bit of funding makes a difference. I was so excited when we were able to fund four worthy initiatives in our own community.
