The AI Safety Fund is the pooled safety-research vehicle of the frontier labs themselves - Anthropic, Google, Microsoft and OpenAI - topped up by philanthropic partners including the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, the Packard Foundation, Schmidt Sciences and Jaan Tallinn, and it is one of the few places where independent researchers can get funded to evaluate exactly the systems those labs build.
It has run two grant rounds, in November 2024 and December 2025.
The most recent awarded more than USD 5 million across 11 grantees selected from over 100 proposals, a roughly 11 percent acceptance rate, with recipients spanning universities (Caltech, University of Toronto) and specialist safety firms (Apollo Research, SecureBio) on problems including scheming detection in AI agents, biosecurity threat assessment, evaluation of cyber-offensive capability, and governance of multi-agent systems.
Past RFPs have been issued in three areas: biosecurity, cybersecurity, and AI agent evaluation and synthetic content. Two structural facts matter for planning. First, the Fund is mid-transition: Meridian Institute, which previously managed it, wound down in June 2025 and management has moved to the Frontier Model Forum, so the administrative contact point has changed.
Second, the Fund has signalled that its remaining money will go to narrowly-scoped projects targeting specific bottlenecks rather than broad programmes - which favours a tightly defined technical proposal over an agenda. No RFP was open at the time of review; enquiries go to the Frontier Model Forum directly.

Awards are competitive: the December 2025 round selected 11 grantees from over 100 proposals, distributing more than USD 5 million, an average of roughly USD 454,000 per grant; the Fund overall was established with more than USD 10 million. The Fund has stated that remaining money will support narrowly-scoped research projects targeting urgent bottlenecks in AI safety and security rather than broad research programmes. Administration transferred from Meridian Institute, which wound down operations in June 2025, to the Frontier Model Forum. At the time of review no open request for proposals was posted and no application deadline, per-grant ceiling or formal eligibility criteria were published on the Fund's pages. Schmidt Sciences opened a 'Scaling AI Safety for a Multi-Agent World' program with awards up to $1 million and an August 8, 2026 deadline. Against a backdrop of federal research slowdowns, here is why private science philanthropy matters more than ever, how these funders differ from federal agencies, and how researchers should approach them.

The three research aims target misalignment under distribution shift, predictive-validity evaluations, and oversight of superhuman systems. Here is why the structure favors team-based proposals.
Read articleThe Justice Department's new Model Cities Initiative will hand 2 to 4 American cities roughly $300 million in 36-month cooperative agreements to rebuild public safety from the ground up. Applications are due September 1, 2026. The catch that will decide who wins: this is not a police grant, a prosecutor grant, or a behavioral-health grant. It is a single citywide proposal that has to braid all of them together. Here is who is eligible, what the money actually funds, and how a mayor's office should build a proposal that survives DOJ review.
