PROFILE: Established in 1959, the Frost Foundation is located in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It was named for Edwin Ambrose Frost and Virginia Chapelle Frost. It seeks to empower “communities by funding innovative, collaborative initiatives in human rights, education, animal welfare, and environmental stewardship—enabling individuals and organizations to achieve greater self-reliance and lasting impact.

” Grantmaking focus areas are broad and include human services, education, animals, and environment. The foundation supports organizations that are self-reliant, innovative, and creative. Frost provides guidelines for grant seekers, but alliances, collaborations, and mergers are always appreciated.

Grant money goes to general operating funds, program support, and new programs; the funding goes to organizations in the states of New Mexico and Louisiana. Grants for K-12 and Higher Education Education is the foundation’s largest area of support, and while most grants support primary and secondary education, a few have supported institutions of higher education.

The Frost Foundation has given millions to Tulane University’s Medical Center over the years to endow the Mary Amelia Douglas-Whited Community Women’s Health Education Center. Other education grantees include Hopi School, Desert Academy at Santa Fe, Literacy Link, New Mexico School for the Arts, Teach for America- New Mexico, and Aztec Municipal School District.

Grants for Community Development and Human Services The Frost Foundation’s human services grantmaking is broad and supports nonprofits that meet basic needs within the community. Grantees include St. Vincent Hospital, Magdalene Serenity House, The Food Depot, Dental Care in Your Home, Embudo Valley Library and Community Center, and Memory Care Alliance.

Grants for Animal Welfare Grants supporting animal rescue and welfare organizations include Espanola Humane, Kindred Spirits Animal Sanctuary, Blue Sky Foundation, Chimp Haven, Animal Protection New Mexico, and Sierra County Animal Rescue Society. Frost’s environmental grants support land use and environmental education groups.

Grantees include The Nature Conservancy, New Mexico Environmental Law Center, Alliance for the Earth, Earth Care International Earth Care New Mexico, and Cottonwood Gulch Expeditions. Most foundation grants are $2,000 to $25,000, although some have gone as high as $500,000. Frost awards between $500,000 to $1 million annually and holds $33.

Far more grants go to New Mexico groups than to organizations in Louisiana. Frost requires all New Mexico grant seekers submit a copy of the New Mexico Attorney General’s confirmation letter to prove they are up-to-date with registration and reporting requirements. The Frost Foundation accepts unsolicited grant applications from nonprofits.

To apply for a Frost grant, send a one-page summary of the proposal, with four copies, to the foundation by the deadline. Deadlines fall on December 1 for the March board meeting and June 1 for the September board meeting. These summaries must be sent by online portal .

If the foundation is interested in a request, it will ask for a full proposal within about eight weeks of the initial submission. Grant awards are made in mid-March and late September each year, and organizations can expect to receive a decision from the foundation within four weeks after the board meeting.
