Fundamental Research Career Development Awards

Fundamental Research Career Development Awards is sponsored by International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH). This award program rewards and encourages early-career researchers in the field of thrombosis and hemostasis.

The International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) is committed to its mission to advance the understanding prevention and treatment of conditions related to thrombosis and hemostasis. To reward and encourage early-career researchers in the field, the Society has established the **Fundamental Research Career Development Award**.

Up to three annual awards of up to $50,000 USD will be given in the following categories: * Fundamental Mechanisms of Thrombosis * Fundamental Mechanisms of Hemostasis * Non-canonical Interactions of the Hemostatic System Fundamental research is defined as basic and/or translational science in the field of thrombosis and hemostasis as described in the recent communication of the SSC00204-5/fulltext).

The Fundamental Research Career Development Award was created with the goal of strengthening basic and translational science research, and helping establish the careers of the next generation of scientists in the fields of thrombosis and hemostasis. Recipients will be invited to present their research and discuss the impact of the award at future ISTH Congresses.

Applicants must have the following to apply: * Applicants with a science background must be within 3-8 years of award of their PhD * Applicants with a clinical background (MD) must be within 3-8 years of completion of clinical subspecialty training * Demonstrated excellence in research through their publication records * Submitted an abstract for the upcoming ISTH Congress **The application period for 2026 closed on March 20.

** Applications must meet the following conditions: * Applications must be submitted online * Must include a proposed work program of no more than 1500 words, with no more than 10 references and 2 figures.

* A letter of support for the applicant must be submitted from a mentor, supporter or ISTH member * Itemized budget for the use of the award funds must be submitted with application * Must disclose other funding sources applied for or that has already been obtained * No more than 10% of award funds can be allocated to indirect costs to applicants’ institutions.

Awardees may supplement award funds with funding from a mentor or other internal sources if institutional overhead is greater than 10% * Applicants must have submitted an abstract for the ISTH Congress in the year they apply for the award * Submission of detailed report to the ISTH Education Committee within 60 days of the end of the year in which the award was disbursed * Awardees must become ISTH member if they are not currently upon acceptance of the award.

* Requests for extension of the 8-year eligibility window for parental leave or long term medical leave will require documented confirmation of this leave and will be considered by the ISTH Education Committee **Funding**Up to three (3) awards will be conferred each year.

Funding totals $50,000 USD for each award and can be used for the following expenses: * Reagents/laboratory supplies * Administrative expenses (such as travel, shipping, etc.) * Staffing support (for research or administrative assistants) *No more than 10% of award funds can be allocated to indirect costs to applicants’ institutions.
