Furthermore program (for publishing nonfiction books) is sponsored by The J. M. Kaplan Fund.

This program supports New York 501(c)(3) organizations publishing nonfiction books on art, architecture, design, cultural history, cities, or conservation. This can include history-focused works that make historical records and research accessible to a wider audience.

FURTHERMORE grants in publishing Furthermore supports publication of nonfiction books in the following categories. Arts & Design – the arts, architecture, and design History & Society – history, culture, and civic life Preservation & Conservation – cultural heritage, the environment, and the natural sciences Furthermore will hold two funding cycles in 2026.

Applications for the spring cycle will open in early January, with a deadline of 1 March . Applications for the fall cycle will open in June, with a deadline of 1 September . Please note: Beginning with the Fall 2026 application cycle, Furthermore will no longer accept proposals for exhibition-related publications.

While exhibition publications have long been an important part of the program and have contributed significantly to Furthermore’s history and impact, the program’s focus is evolving to support a broader range of nonfiction books. M. Kaplan Fund was established in 1945 by businessman and philanthropist Jacob Merrill Kaplan (1891–1987), who was its president until 1977. Today the Fund is managed by an Operating Board that consists of J.

M. Kaplan’s seven grandchildren.
