FutureFoodS Call 2025 is open for applications | NWO European Partnership for a Sustainable Future of Food Systems FutureFoodS is an innovative European Partnership that focuses on transforming food production and consumption in Europe towards more sustainable and resilient systems.
This partnership brings together leading experts, research institutions, businesses and policymakers to develop joint solutions to the complex challenges we face in our food systems, such as climate change, biodiversity loss and food security. Go to FutureFoodS website Topics of the second Call This call for transnational research projects focuses on the theme of Sustainable Future of Food Systems. Transnational consortia consist of at least three different research institutions from three different countries affiliated with the Horizon Europe programme. This Call will be open to applications relating to one of the topics described below.
Topic 1: Domestic food practices enhancing sustainable and healthy diets Topic 2: Towards diverse, sustainable and circular food processing systems Topic 3: Trust and transparency in sustainable food systems Please note that primary production activities such as the growing of food crops (including seafood), other elements of agricultural production and various specific aspects related to it, as well as nutrition- and lifestyle-related diseases are not in focus in this partnership.
The focus of FutureFoodS is on issues post-harvest. Primary production aspects are covered in other Horizon Europe partnerships. View the Call for proposals Participating countries and transnational cooperation In the FutureFoodS Call 2025, a number of funders from different countries are expected to collaborate in supporting the green and digital transition, with a focus on food systems (from harvest onwards).
This joint effort contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the European Green Deal, particularly the Farm to Fork Strategy, which aims to accelerate the transition to a sustainable food system. Funding can be applied for in accordance with the applicable national and/or regional conditions.
In the Netherlands, theTaskforce for Applied Research SIA and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature (LVVN) will also participate in this call. A partnering tool will be available on the homepage of the application system to help applicants find partners. In addition, a webinar for the potential Dutch applicants will be held on 1 December, 2025.
On Monday 15 December, NWO, the SIA Steering Committee and the Ministry of LVVN are organising a webinar for Dutch applicants about the new FutureFoodS Call 2025. During this online event, you will receive more information about the call and the conditions of each of the three Dutch funding bodies. The following funding bodies from the Netherlands are participating in this Call: NWO, the SIA Regulatory Body and the Ministry of LVVN.
Universities can apply for funding from NWO as the main applicant. Universities of applied sciences can apply for funding from the SIA as the main applicant. TO2 institutions can apply for funding from the Ministry of LVVN as the main applicant.
A total amount of 2 million has been made available for NWO applications, with a maximum of 400,000 per application.
