From Student to Volunteer: How One GEICO Associate Gave Back to Her Former Elementary School For National Volunteer month, GEICO associates in Macon, Georgia, distributed over 500 shoes to students at Panola Way Elementary School in Lithonia, Georgia, through the company's partnership with Shoes That Fit . When presented with the opportunity, GEICO Service Manager Ahyuana raised her hand to lend her service to the cause.
"I grew up as a Panola Way Panther, and Lithonia has always been my home," said Ahyuana. "My parents still live in the area, just two traffic lights away from the school."
Throughout her more than two decades at GEICO, Ahyuana is proud to have been named the No. 1 Manager in Auto Service in the country in 2024; she's a mentor, and a people's champion - helping associates discover the impact being at GEICO creates beyond their day-to-day jobs. "I know that volunteering doesn't just benefit the community - it builds stronger teams, fosters purpose, and deepens the associate experience," says Ahyuana.
"When people give back together, they grow together." Ahyuana and other associates made a meaningful difference for more than 650 students at the metro Atlanta elementary school. "One of the little boys said that this was his first new pair of shoes he's ever gotten," said Ahyuana.
As a "thank you," students filled a reception area -- formerly the principal's office as Ahyuana recalls -- with cards of gratitude for the associates who volunteered. Ahyuana has collected the cards and is currently adding them to the wall of inspiration at the Macon office.
