Supports research on the fundamental mechanisms involved in the organization, dynamics, processing, expression, regulation and evolution of genetic and epigenetic information.
Supports research on the fundamental mechanisms involved in the organization, dynamics, processing, expression, regulation and evolution of genetic and epigenetic information. NSF BIO invites research addressing fundamental questions about genetics, epigenetics, and gene expression mechanisms in diverse organisms.
Cross-disciplinary and collaborative research is encouraged, especially employing perspectives and approaches from computational, mathematical, chemical, and physical sciences and engineering. Creative tool or methods development for quantitative and predictive understanding of new or long-standing questions about genetic mechanisms, is welcome. Primarily descriptive projects are given lower priority.
Broad areas of focus include, but are not limited to: Spatiotemporal organization, coordination and/or regulation of processes that maintain, replicate, transcribe and translate the genome Mechanisms relating genomic or epigenomic determinants to molecular or cellular phenotypes RNA-based regulatory mechanisms that modulate gene expression and function Posttranscriptional and posttranslational modifications of RNA and proteins, and how they individually and jointly regulate genetic and epigenetic processes Structure-function relationships, interactions, and activities of macromolecules underlying genetic and epigenetic mechanisms Molecular mechanisms of evolution of genes and genomes Awards made through this program Browse projects funded by this program Map of recent awards made through this program Directorate for Biological Sciences (BIO) Division of Molecular and Cellular Biosciences (BIO/MCB)
