Getty Foundation: Connecting Art Histories

Getty Foundation: Connecting Art Histories is a grant from The Getty Foundation that strengthens art history globally by increasing intellectual exchange among scholars across nations and regions.

Since its 2009 launch, the initiative has served over 1,000 early and mid-career scholars from Africa, Asia, Latin America, East-Central Europe, and the Mediterranean Basin through intergenerational research seminars and visiting professor programs. More than 80 grants have built capacity in regions where art history is an emerging discipline.

The Foundation now welcomes proposals from regional project teams that bring art historians into dialogue with scholars from adjacent disciplines, curators, conservators, and individuals rooted in local cultural traditions.

Through grants that forge connections among people and ideas, this initiative affirms that the power and vitality of any scholarly discipline rest on the ability to bring people together.

Intergenerational research seminars and visiting professor programs that have served over 1,000 early and mid-career scholars from Africa, Asia, Latin America, East-Central Europe, and the Mediterranean Basin Increased capacity in the field of art history in places where it is an emerging discipline through more than 80 grants since 2009 Edited volumes emerging from at least four research seminars that have given scholars career-building opportunities to publish their work Presentations on Connecting Art Histories projects at major international conferences, including CIHA and the College Art Association The Getty Foundation is exploring an evolution of the Connecting Art Histories initiative, which was launched in 2009 to strengthen the field globally by increasing opportunities for sustained intellectual exchange across nations and regions, especially in places where art history is an emerging discipline.

Across many regions, art historians have been engaged in dynamic, interdisciplinary work aimed at expanding the interpretive range of the field.

Building on this momentum, the Foundation welcomes proposals from regional project teams that bring together art historians with scholars from adjacent disciplines; arts professionals such as curators, conservators, and artists; and individuals whose expertise is rooted in local traditions and cultural stewardship.

By more intentionally supporting collaborations that bring art historians into dialogue with others invested in understanding art, we aim to open new possibilities for advancing a more adaptive, connected, and relevant discipline across diverse geographies and intellectual traditions. Connecting Art Histories has consistently focused on regions where economic or political realities have prevented collaboration in the past.

Our early efforts concentrated on funding programs that served the Mediterranean Basin and Latin America, but we subsequently expanded our focus to include the Asia and East-Central Europe.

The core activities that we have typically supported through Connecting Art Histories grants train younger scholars and build their professional networks with peers and advanced researchers through immersive seminars, virtual convenings, dissertation workshops, and graduate courses.

2009: Initiative launches with first grants concentrated mainly in the Greater Mediterranean and Latin America 2012: Convening of first five years of grantees at Getty Center 2013: Scope expands to include more projects serving scholars in East Central Europe and throughout Asia 2020: Virtual convenings with current and past grantees to assess field needs during the COVID-19 pandemic 2021: Special limited term funding for virtual-only programs to counter ongoing intellectual isolation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic There is no annual deadline; grants are awarded on an ongoing basis.

Scholars who are interested in developing a Connecting Art Histories project are advised to review the descriptions of grants awarded and submit an inquiry by email using the contact information below. Inquiries should include a brief statement (no more than 300 words) on the intellectual framework of the proposed project, its expected participants, and how it relates to the goals of the initiative stated above.
