Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) Initiative

Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) Initiative is a U.S. Department of State program that funds entrepreneurship and science-based innovation programs in developing countries to promote economic growth and U.S. diplomatic goals. GIST supports startup competitions, mentorship networks, technology transfer, and capacity-building programs that connect emerging-market entrepreneurs with global resources.

Eligible applicants are U.S. and international nonprofit organizations, universities, and innovation ecosystem builders with experience in entrepreneurship development. Grant amounts vary by program and region; cooperative agreements are common. Projects must demonstrate measurable impact on local entrepreneurship ecosystems.

S. Department of State’s Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) initiative empowers young innovators through networking, skills building, mentoring, and access to financing to develop startup solutions that address economic and development challenges.

The GIST initiative is predicated upon a simple idea: when you provide young men and women with the skills they need to be successful entrepreneurs, they will gain confidence and be more likely to take the risks needed to turn their ideas into new ventures.

GIST participants in 135 emerging economies can develop skills, build networks, find mentors, and access financing through a combination of in-country training, a global pitch competition, interactive online programming, and direct connections to U.S. experts. GIST helps create conditions for successful local entrepreneurship ecosystems and enables global youth to develop local solutions to local problems.

Since 2011, GIST has engaged more than 2. 8 million innovators and entrepreneurs worldwide and mentored over 5,500 startups that have generated more than $110 million in revenue. The GIST initiative is led by the Office of Science and Technology Cooperation (STC) within the Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs (OES).
