Google Cloud Research Credits is a small, fast, rolling programme that is best understood as seed compute rather than a research grant. Faculty and postdoctoral researchers receive around USD 5,000 in Google Cloud credits and PhD students around USD 1,000, disbursed as billing credits against Google Cloud services including GPU and TPU instances, BigQuery, Vertex AI and storage.
Eligibility is restricted to faculty, PhD students and postdoctoral researchers at accredited higher education institutions and eligible non-profit research institutions in approved countries, which makes it one of the more accessible international compute routes for researchers outside the United States.
The application is deliberately lightweight - a 250-word project proposal covering the research problem, which Google Cloud tools will be used, a timeline with milestones and expected outcomes, plus a required output from the Google Cloud pricing calculator and an existing Cloud Billing Account ID.
Applicants must also explain how the work will be funded once credits are exhausted, which is a real assessment criterion and not a formality. Two constraints materially shape how the award should be used. Credits must be activated within 60 days of the stated project start date, and they expire 365 days from redemption or when fully spent, whichever comes first - so applying before the work is ready wastes the award.
Credits are non-transferable, cannot be sold or bartered, and cannot be used for commercial purposes or personal use. The programme does not run a dedicated AI or machine learning track, so AI projects compete within the general computer science field; the practical implication is that proposals should justify the specific Google Cloud services required rather than assume AI framing carries weight on its own.
