Graduate Research Excellence Grants (R.C. Lewontin Early Award and Rosemary Grant Advanced Award)

Graduate Research Excellence Grants (R. C. Lewontin Early Award and Rosemary Grant Advanced Award) is sponsored by Society for the Study of Evolution (SSE).

These grants provide funding for evolutionary biology research for Master's and PhD students. The R. C.

Lewontin Early Award is for students in the early stages of their PhDs, and the Rosemary Grant Advanced Award is for students in the later stages.

Graduate Research Excellence Grants Graduate Research Excellence Grants The Graduate Research Excellence Grants (GREGs) consist of the R. C. Lewontin Early Award and the Rosemary Grant Advanced Award and provide funding for evolutionary biology research for Master’s and PhD students.

In 2026, the GREG program will provide a total of $145,000 in research funds. This amount includes $50,000 from 2025 society journal revenue, which was made possible by authors publishing with Evolution and Evolution Letters . Thank you!

The application deadline for both awards is May 18, 2026 at 5:00 PM Eastern . We expect to notify all applicants of decisions in September. Applicants to either award must be members of SSE.

Applicants who are not already members of SSE are advised to join SSE as soon as possible to facilitate their applications. SSE offers reduced or free membership fees for researchers in 152 countries and territories through the Global Membership Assistance Program . Advisors who are SSE members can purchase 1-year Gift Memberships for their students for $10 USD.

Students in need of membership may also contact communications@evolutionsociety. org for further assistance. Applicants do not need to be enrolled in an evolutionary biology program to apply, but their proposal must address a topic in evolutionary biology.

Field Safety Plan Requirements A Field Safety Plan is required only if your proposal includes field work. The Field Safety Plan must be uploaded as a separate document from your Proposal and Budget document. Field Safety Definition: Field safety includes threats to all members of the field team (you as well as anyone you may be supervising and/or accompanied by, including local collaborators) and covers physical and psychological harm.

Threats to field safety may include natural hazards (e.g. snake bite; falling while climbing tree; severe weather exposure, boat accident while traveling to site), as well as community hazards (e.g. physical violence; imprisonment or detainment; discrimination and harassment due to identity—including race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, disability status, or religion).

These community threats may come from people outside your field team who you encounter while conducting fieldwork or internally from members of your field team. Field safety risk is affected by the nature of the proposed work, characteristics of the field site, the political and cultural context in which the work is conducted, and the skills and knowledge of the field team.

An extensive list of field safety resources is available from Field Futures . Describe the primary field safety concerns present in this project keeping in mind the above definition. Be sure to consider potential physical and psychological harms from natural and community hazards.

(100 words max) Describe how you will (1) prevent—to the best of your ability before an incident occurs and (2) mitigate—to the best of your ability after an incident were to occur—the safety concerns described above. Your description may include available institutional resources or other mechanisms should no appropriate institutional resources be available.

(200 words max) What is your plan for communicating about safety within your field team (especially if you will be supervising others) and externally with your university, department, and/or lab? Who would you contact if an incident were to occur? How will you prevent/mitigate safety concerns through effective communication?

(100 words max) Field safety plans will not be used to evaluate proposals. After awardees are selected, their field safety plans will be reviewed, and any major deficits in their field safety plans will need to be addressed by the applicant prior to the disbursement of funds. 3. Advisor Letter Requirements The letter should be signed by your thesis advisor or graduate director and should confirm that you meet the eligibility requirements for the award, including 1) approximate start and end dates of your degree, 2) that the proposed work is independent of the advisor’s research, and 3) that the proposed work is outside the scope of the funding currently held by the applicant or the advisor.

How to write your proposal Your research proposal should include the objectives, methods, significance, and schedule of your project, including how the award would enhance your thesis work. Focus on convincing the selection committee of the importance of the question, how the funds will allow you to reach certain objectives and expand the scope of your thesis work, and how these objectives fit into your overall thesis project.

General proposal structure: - Start with the big picture: What is the context of your proposed research? What is already known about this area of study? - Summarize previous research in this field: What findings will your work build upon?

How will it address a gap in our knowledge of this field? - Data collection: What data will you collect, and how? - Data analysis: How will you analyze your data?

Applications will be reviewed on the following two broad criteria: Proposal structure, logic, and clarity (A) Motivation of research: How well does the proposal situate the project in the context of the field by stating the big-picture question and/or the broader significance? (B) Clarity of hypotheses or questions: Are the specific hypotheses or research questions clearly stated?

Does the proposal provide sufficient rationale so that the evaluator can understand the logic behind the hypotheses or questions? (C) Connection between objectives and design: Does the proposal clearly and explicitly tie the hypothesis or research questions and the methods to the broad motivating question? Frequently Asked Questions If I get the award, do I have to use the funds by a certain time? No, there is no deadline for using the funds. My faculty advisor isn’t a member of SSE - am I eligible?

Yes, if you meet the other requirements - faculty advisors are no longer required to be members of SSE. Can I use the award to pay part of my own salary? No, salaries are not considered a research expense for this award.

Awarded funds, can, however, be used to pay hourly wages for student research assistants. Can I use the award to attend a meeting or workshop? No. Meeting or workshop attendance and/or travel are not considered research expenses for this award.
