(Regional Centers) ## Recipient Organization UNIVERSITY OF VERMONT & STATE AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE Burlington, VERMONT 054051704 The Northeast Sustainable Research and Education (SARE) Program offers competitive grants to farmers, educators, service providers, researchers, graduate students and others to address key issues affecting the sustainability of agriculture throughout our region.
Northeast SARE is one of four regional SARE programs funded by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture. The program--including funding decisions--is driven by the Northeast SARE outcome statement: Agriculture in the Northeast will be diversified and profitable, providing healthful products to customers.
Farmers and the people they work with will steward resources to ensure sustainability and resilience, and foster conditions where farmers can have high quality of life and communities can thrive. Projects must take place in the Northeast region that includes: Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, West Virginia, Vermont, and Washington, D. C.

The overall purpose of this set of competitive grants is to promote research, outreach, and training that will help agriculture become more profitable, protect natural resources and the environment, and improve the quality of life for farmers and The regional office of Northeast SARE coordinates sending out requests for applications as well as the review and recommendation process for six distinct grant programs: Research and Education grants, Professional Development Program grants, Farmer grants, Partnership grants, Graduate Student grants, and State Program grants.
The regional staff, in consultation with the Administrative Council, assembles the Technical Committee to take part in review of proposals. The Administrative Council selects proposals to be funded and sets the region's grant making priorities and policies, within the boundaries of SARE's authorizing legislation.
The regional Plan of Work includes issuing requests for applications, establishing review teams and procedures, reviewing proposals, and selecting proposals to be considered for funding by the regional Administrative Council. RFAsfor each grant program are updated and ssued annually, specifying timelines and criteria for individual grant programs.

Technical Committee and Administrative Council members comprise review panels for all the grant program, and they are provided with orientation to the review process. Applicants and grantees are provided supportby staff to faciliate their understanding of and success with the program. Communications are ongoing to promote the program and its products.
