OFSN Professional Development Scholarships Limited funding for conference and training attendance Eligibility: School-based educators, child nutrition professionals, food producers ODE Farm to CNP Education Grant Oregon Department of Education — $2,000–$15,000+ The ODE Farm to CNP Education Grant supports school garden start-ups and farm-to-school education projects.

The 2025–2027 cycle includes two tracks: a Mini Grant ($2,000–$14,999) for smaller starter projects and a larger grant for established programs. Award: $2,000–$14,999 (Mini) or higher Recurring national grants that support school gardens, garden-based education, and farm to school programs.

USDA Farm to School Grant Program $100,000–$500,000 · Typically opens in fall The USDA's Patrick Leahy Farm to School Grant Program provides funds to implement programs that improve access to local foods in schools. Grants support local food sourcing, taste tests, school gardens, field trips, and agricultural education. A 25% match from non-federal sources is required.

Award: $100,000–$500,000 · Eligibility: Schools in National School Lunch/Breakfast Program, nonprofits, state/local agencies, tribal organizations, producers Whole Kids Foundation Garden Grant $3,500 · Opens ~February, deadline ~March Provides funding for the planning, construction, and operation of edible garden projects at K–12 schools. Priority is given to applicants serving a majority of under-resourced students.

Eligibility: K–12 schools, nonprofits with school partnerships Captain Planet Foundation $500–$2,500 · Two application windows per year Funds school garden projects that focus on environmental stewardship and project-based STEM learning. Accepts applications in two windows each year. Also offers the Project Learning Garden program with garden beds, supplies, and a mobile cooking cart for eligible elementary schools.

Window 1: Mar 15 – Jul 15 · Window 2: Sep 15 – Jan 15 KidsGardening Youth Garden Grant $750 + tools & seeds · Opens ~October, deadline ~December One of the longest-running garden grant programs (since 1982), supporting school and youth gardens. Grantees also receive tools and seeds from partner organizations. Applications available in English and Spanish.

Funds new or expanded youth garden programs and greenspaces. Includes specialty awards for programs with greater funding needs, LGBTQ+ youth, and programs led by people of color.

Eligibility: Nonprofits, schools, government entities serving 15+ youth Bonnie Plants 3rd Grade Cabbage Program Free cabbage plants + $1,000 scholarship Free cabbage plants delivered to 3rd-grade classrooms. Students grow the cabbages and the "best in class" entry is entered for a $1,000 state scholarship. Registration deadlines vary by location — enter your zip code on the Bonnie Plants website for your specific window.

Corporate & Retail Grants Many large retailers and corporations offer community grants that can support school garden programs. Check with your local stores for availability and resources.

Lowe's Toolbox for Education $2,000–$5,000 · Fall and spring cycles Funds a wide range of school improvement projects including garden programs at K–12 public schools. Eligibility: K–12 public schools Up to $5,000 in gift cards Provides Home Depot gift cards for nonprofit organizations and public schools to support community improvement projects, including garden builds.
