The Foundation’s programmatic areas of focus are (1) education for children and youth; and (2) healthcare and disease prevention (setting up safe water and sanitation systems); and (3) conservation. The Foundation also wants to raise awareness in the United States about development aid and encourages American families to become involved and participate.

Eligible to receive grant funding are (U.S.-based) non-profit organisations that are classified as 501(c)(3) by the Internal Revenue Service. They rather support grassroots and local groups with the exception of a few large international health and development NGOs. Grant funding is provided for projects in Sub-Saharan Africa.

So far they have funded projects in Kenya, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda, South Sudan, Rwanda, Ghana and Zambia. Grant amounts vary and depend on many factors but generally range from $5,000 to $15,000. Important considerations may include: (1) applicant organisation’s program budget; (2) consistency of the program goals with the FFF priorities; and (3) amount of support the program is receiving from other sources.

Organisations should submit proposals requesting a reasonable amount of financial support for efforts that most closely match the FFF priorities. The FFF is rarely the sole funder of a project and encourages applicants to develop a variety of individuals, government and private sources for projects.

Applications may be submitted at any time throughout the year, using the application form that can be downloaded on the Foundation’s website. Grant periods are usually 12 months in length and only one active grant per organisation is permitted. Completed applications must be sent by mail and applicants are advised to go through the great application checklist before final submission.
