The Lives of Elderly Black Women Do Matter! Totaling an investment of Courtesy of Whittier Street Health Center About the Grimes King Foundation, Inc. Since 1860, the Grimes King Foundation, Inc. (GKF) – successor to the Home for Aged Colored Women – has honored its commitment to provide support for impoverished, elderly, African American/Black women living in Boston.
Our work has always been to aid in keeping this underserved community of women safe and healthy, living independently in their own homes and apartments as long as possible. We are proud to partner with and support Boston-based organizations providing the critical services needed to improve and sustain a better quality of life for these economically challenged women.
Honoring a legacy of giving, our annual grants make possible the continuous delivery of personal care and other direct services to more than 1,650 women. Given this, our current program funding priorities include: Housing has been central to our operations since 1864.
In 2021-22 the Board focused on the positive benefits on keeping seniors at home, as long as possible, by supporting bill-paying services, increased accessibility improvements, minor home repairs, and affordable housing to prevent senior homeless.
Includes access to medical/mental/dental health services, early diagnosis and management of life-changing illness like Diabetes, Cancer & Alzheimer’s, plus access to home-care services, healthy food, nutrition tips, and participation in fitness activities.
Since 2012 the Board focused on reducing elder isolation and depression—particularly in 2020 as isolation has been exacerbated by COVID—elder abuse, transportation, and improving knowledge about and access to needed support services.
Began as a priority in 2014, when gaining access to affordable Internet services or the equipment to access it became a documented digital divide handicapping seniors in general and GKF’s population specifically, distancing elders from family, friends and access to services. In recent years, our funding initiatives have evolved from one annual grant program to three – each with a stated purpose. Your contribution to the Grimes-King Foundation will help to make a difference in the lives of African-American/Black women when they are too old or infirm to work, by supporting organizations providing housing, health care, transportation, social service, mental health, and other services to address their needs.
Your gift to the WALTER JENNINGS, JR. EMERGENCY FUND supports programs needing one-time emergency funding to address specific crises. Launched in during the COVID pandemic in 2020, this fund enables the Foundation to remain responsive to the needs of our constituents during difficult times. Launched in 2022, our Laura B.
Morris micro-grant program was created to both honor our former board member and provide small grants to local area grass roots organizations. We asked a small group of organizations what they might do with an extra $500 to 1,000 and were delighted with the innovative programs proposed and are excited to see what future grants might yield.
