jpg Hazard Fuels Reduction Grants Hazard Fuels Reduction Grants Hazard Fuels Reduction (HFR) grants are funded by the USDA Forest Service, State and Private Forestry branch, and are intended to fund fire risk mitigation treatments on non-federal, non-industrial forest lands. Projects must seek to modify fire behavior through the treatment/reduction of hazard fuels and must take place within 1.
5 miles of a federal project with similar fire mitigation objectives.
This program is very similar to the Western States Fire Managers (WSFM) grant program with the following differences: Federal project adjacency requirement (as mentioned above) Education components of the project must be specific to the project area – no general education No match funding requirement (leverage funding is highly encouraged) FY26 Hazard Fuels Reduction (HFR) Request for Proposals Download the FY2026 HFR Project Proposal Packet HFR and County Wildfire Protection Plans (CWPP) In Idaho, for a project to be eligible for HFR funding, the project must be explicitly identified in a CWPP, Hazard Mitigation Plan, or equivalent document.
Coordination with the County entity responsible for maintaining the CWPP is required. Eligible entities include: State, county, and local agencies Non-profit (501c3) organizations *** Individual private landowners are not eligible to apply for funding directly with IDL. Project proposals must be submitted to the Idaho Department of Lands via email.
The proposal packet includes: Acknowledgement Form (initials and signature required at submission) Grant Project – Budget Development Guidelines and Restrictions The IDL is happy to provide input and guidance during project planning efforts for those looking to fund their projects with this grant program.
