Healing Illinois is a statewide initiative of the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS), managed in partnership with the Field Foundation. Now in its fifth year, the program has invested more than $4. 3 million annually in organizations across Illinois doing the work of racial healing, community connection, and civic renewal.
Healing Illinois funds projects that bring people together to build trusted relationships, foster understanding, and strengthen the bonds of community. We believe that healing is not separate from our civic life; it is foundational to it. When residents can listen to one another, share their stories, and find common ground, communities become stronger and our democracy becomes healthier.
Through three funding priorities, Healing Illinois supports organizations leading this work across the state: Healing Through Narrative: Storytelling helps us see one another more fully. This category funds projects that lift up stories that have been untold, excluded or misunderstood, and projects that create opportunities for those stories to travel across communities. Healing Through Dialogue: Healing happens in relationships.
This category funds projects that bring people together across differences to build trust, empathy, and a sense of shared purpose through conversation and shared experience. Healing Through Place: Communities carry history in their landmarks, parks, and gathering spaces. This category funds projects that use community and public spaces as sites for reflection, remembrance, and belonging.
Healing Illinois Info Sessions Ready to apply and want to write the strongest proposal possible? Information Sessions will go beyond the Request for Proposals (RFP) session to provide context, examples, and guidance that can make the difference between a good proposal and a great one. We will walk through what reviewers are looking for, what strong proposals look like, and what common mistakes to avoid.

3 million+ Regional Awards: Up to $30,000 Multi-Regional Awards: Up to $50,000 Funding Period: November 2026 - June 2027 Organizations eligible to apply for a Healing Illinois grant must: Be a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in good standing with the Illinois Secretary of State, or a public agency (school, library, park district, or municipality).
Be in good standing with the Grant Accountability and Transparency Act (GATA) and fully pre-qualified through the GATA Grantee Portal. Maintain an active registration in SAM. gov. Not be on the Federal Excluded Parties List.
Not be on a State of Illinois stop-payment or sanctions list. Community-based or unincorporated groups may apply with a fiscal sponsor that meets GATA compliance requirements. Learn more about GATA compliance.
