Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)Health Research Training Platform Funding Opportunity – GLOPID-R Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Health Research Training Platform Funding Opportunity The CIHR Centre for Research on Pandemic Preparedness and Health Emergencies (CRPPHE) and the Institute of Infection and Immunity (III) are partnering to fund two pools focused on One Health in the recently launched CIHR Health Research Training Platform (2024/25).
These pools are: One Health: Antimicrobial Resistance One Health: Emerging Zoonoses This funding opportunity is intended to support the development of interdisciplinary, inter-jurisdictional, and intersectoral research training platforms that will attract a diverse cadre of trainees and early career researchers and equip them with the foundational skills and knowledge required for a wide range of careers within and outside of academia.
The overarching objectives are to: support the development of structured, openly available, diverse, inclusive, and sustainable training and mentoring platforms that build Canadian capacity in areas of health research, health issues, scientific opportunities, and critical gaps; and support the development of skills that increase the likelihood of employability and career prospects of diverse trainees and ECRs across sectors.
These training platforms are expected to provide training and mentoring opportunities that go above and beyond standard research training programs trainees typically experience. The maximum amount is $450,000 per year for up to 6 years, for a total of $2,700,000 per pool.
CIHR is providing a Partner Linkage Tool that is intended to facilitate connections and collaborations between potential applicants and/or partners should there be interest.
Application Deadline: February 1, 2024 Funding Start Date: May 1, 2024 CIHR Health Research Training Platform (2024/25) Addressing Infectious and Congenital Syphilis in Canada Funding Opportunity CIHR – HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted and Blood-Borne Infections (STBBI) Research Initiative, in partnership with CIHR- Centre for Pandemic Preparedness and Health Emergencies (CRPPHE), the CIHR-Institute of Indigenous Peoples’ Health (IIPH), Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) and the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) launched the funding opportunity Addressing Infectious and Congenital Syphilis in Canada.
This grant aims to support implementation science for syphilis point of care testing, and new models of care for prevention of congenital syphilis. The total funding amount is $2,750,000, enough to fund approximately 11 grants with funding pools dedicated to populations most impacted by the recent rise in cases.
Although cases of syphilis have been rising sharply in Canada among both men and women, from 2017 to 2021, cases of infectious syphilis increased by 729% among women, compared to 96% among men over the same period, with 87% of cases among women in 2020 occurring in those aged 15 to 39 years.
The changes in the demographics affected have led to the re-emergence of congenital syphilis, which occurs when syphilis is passed to a fetus during pregnancy or childbirth. In the Prairies and in the Northwest Territories, Indigenous populations have particularly been affected by the rising rates of both infectious and congenital syphilis.
