In 2014, AstraZeneca launched the Healthy Heart Africa (HHA) programme with vision of bringing positive transformations to the healthcare landscape across the By focusing on resilience , climate action , and equity , and expanding to cover CKD , HHA addresses the growing impact of cardiovascular and Kidney diseases.
Through earlier screening, improved sustainable practices, HHA aims to slow disease progression, reduce healthcare burdens, and minimize environmental impacts, aligning with AstraZeneca’s commitment to equitable and Healthy Heart Africa is continually focused on the integration of NCD care into the patient’s journey, from diagnosis to treatment: Screening and Early diagnosis Hypertension is a silent killer, responsible for a significant portion of deaths globally 2 .
In Africa, over 27% of adults live with hypertension 3 — a rate far above the global A decade ago, only 25. 8% of the countries have developed or adopted guidelines for the management of hypertension and there was a lack of ad hoc screening and proper referral systems for patients identified at routine screening 4 . undertreated in Africa.

Retrieved 10 By 2030 reduce by one third premature mortality from NCDs throught prevention and treatement Recognizing the critical need, AstraZeneca launched Healthy Heart Africa Build awareness within the Enhancing public awareness about hypertension and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) is central to Healthy Heart Africa. Without increased awareness of the problem, it would be almost impossible to make tangible progress.
We pursue a multifaceted approach to educate promote early detection, and encourage individuals to seek care. The Uganda Protestant Medical Bureau (UPMB) leveraged radio broadcasts to reach remote communities with essential health information.
By hosting interactive radio shows – for example, talk shows where listeners can call in – UPMB hypertension and other NCDs, fostering an open dialogue about health aims to overcome social barriers, increase awareness, and motivate individuals in hard-to-reach areas to seek screening and treatment.
Equip frontline health systems Through HHA we provided the necessary tools and training to facilities and providers to support integrating hypertension screening and management into Automated blood pressure machines with accessories for Weight and height scales for calculating Body Mass Index Stethoscopes and other medical instruments for comprehensive examinations.
Job aids and protocols displayed in clinics for quick Data capturing and reporting tools such as registers, intake forms, and digital applications. Develop protocols and policies We worked with Ministries of Health in Africa to establish national guidelines for Cardiovascular diseases (including hypertension) early detection and management, as well as national data collection tools to inform decision-making.
The programme supported laying out these guidelines in all active countries and supported the developments of the CKD guidelines in Ghana and Uganda “the first of its kind in the continent”.
