HEAR US Awards

HEAR US Awards is sponsored by NYU Tisch School of the Arts. The HEAR US (Helping Elevate and Recapitalize Underrepresented Stories) awards are designed to celebrate and advance student projects that center BIPOC voices and stories. They support projects at all phases of completion and provide one-on-one mentorship.

The Department of Performance Studies and NYU offer a variety of grant opportunities to support student work and research. Learn more about the resources available to current Performance Studies students below. The HEAR US (Helping Elevate and Recapitalize Underrepresented Stories) awards are designed to celebrate and advance student projects that center BIPOC voices and stories.

HEAR US will expand on the commitments Tisch has made against racial inequality by funding students who are committed to combating systematic marginalization in the creation and leadership of artistic and scholarly works.

Because the HEAR US awards are designed to catalyze a long-term cultural shift, we want to support projects at all phases of completion with tiered levels of funding ($1,000, $5,000 and $10,000 grants), and provide one-on-one mentorship for any proposal advancing through the first of two rounds of review.

Mentors will help project leads navigate the presentation process, explore issues of representation, and amplify their voices through counsel and community. All current Tisch graduate and undergraduate students who are making creative and/or scholarly works centering Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) voices and narratives are encouraged to apply.

Successful proposals will: Foreground BIPOC voices and/or BIPOC narratives through creative and/or scholarly works that center BIPOC voices, work, or stories. For example: scripts, scores, songs, chapters, films, dances, photography, games, research, scholarship, installations, performances are all eligible. Demonstrate capacity to complete the proposed activity within the grant period.

Google Form will require: A description of how funding will be used. A short work sample suitable for a 2-3 minute panelist review (ex: 1-2 pages of written work, 3-5 slides of still imagery, or up to 2 minutes of video, audio or other digital material, etc.). For Mid-phase and Completion Grants, work samples should be from proposed project.

Questions based on funding request: Seed Grants (Up to $1,000) A description of the completed project as envisioned by the project lead. Mid-Phase Grants (Up to $5,000) A description of the process leading to the proposal and the completed project as envisioned by the project lead/creative team. Short bios of the project lead/creative team.

Completion Grants (Up to $10,000) A description of the process leading to the proposal and the completed project as envisioned by the project lead/creative team. Short bios of the project lead/creative team. Please Note: HEAR US awards consists of a multi-step review process.

First-round proposals will be reviewed by a panel of working artists and scholars whose works demonstrate inclusionary practices on or around February 4th. The second-round review will consist of a virtual presentation to the panel on or around February 17th. Advancing project leads will be assigned a mentor prior to presenting their proposal and are expected to meet virtually with their assigned mentor prior to the presentation date.

Pitches/presentations should be no more than ten minutes. Presentations may be followed by up to ten minutes of panelist questions.

Biannual PSi International Conference - CRS Travel Support Submission Form Deadline to submit: Wednesday, September 10th @ 5pm All Grant applications must be reviewed and approved by Grant Recipient’s Department Chair, Department Director, or DGS/DUGS as well as by the Associate Dean of Research & Study via email. Attendance only cannot be funded.

Presentations at graduate student conferences or invitational seminars at other institutions also cannot be funded. Complete and approved applications must be submitted no later than 30 days before initial travel is to occur for domestic travel, and 45 days before initial travel for international travel. Students should be in good academic standing.

No Grants will be offered if conference takes place more than 30 days after the day of student’s completion of their degree. Proof of conference/panel acceptance is required. If conferences are outside of the U.S., students are responsible for securing up to date travel documents, including a valid passport and any required entry visa.

Applicants must provide a detailed budget with their application. Grants can cover travel and lodging costs, conference fees, visa fees and a per diem for food. Research & Study Grants should not exceed $1,000 for domestic conferences, and $1,500 for international conferences.

CRS is only awarding conference travel grants for AY25-26 to PS. The Center for Research & Study Research Travel Grant is designed to support students in good academic standing in the three CRS departments with travel, accommodation, and other approved costs related to research opportunities that pertain to their thesis/dissertation and enrich their area of study.

CRS will be awarding two Student Research Travel Grants to Performance Studies students for this academic year. You may find more details on the CRS website. - All Grant applications must be reviewed and approved by Grant Recipient's Department Chair and/or DGS/DUGS as well as by the Associate Dean of Research & Study.

Students Only* ** If you have been approved for a CRS conference travel grant this semester to support attending PSi you are not eligible for the PS Fall Conference Travel grant for this semester . Amount: $500 maximum reimbursement award ( original receipts must be provided ) DUE DATE FOR FALL 2025: September 25th at 5pm EDT.

Awards are limited to travel occurring between September 1st, 2025 and January 31, 2026 Students must be accepted and presenting their work at an academic conference to qualify. Departmental grants are limited to 1 per academic year, per student. All travel applications require that the student is in good academic standing.

students are eligible for one grant per academic year. Maximum Award: $500 per student (disbursed as reimbursement) Eligible Expenses: Airfare, train/bus fare, and lodging. Requirements : Original receipts (in the student's name) must be submitted for all expenses.

All original reimbursement materials must be submitted to the Department of Performance Studies within two weeks of completing the trip. Failure to do so will result in forfeiture of the award. If a research trip is canceled or changed to a virtual format, the award must be forfeited.

Students are responsible for any expenses exceeding the $500 maximum award. The Research Travel Reimbursement Award" is not intended for support to present at a conference.

Each year, fellowships are awarded to three advanced doctoral students in the humanities whose dissertation research shows particular promise. Disciplines include, but are not limited to, history, art history, music, philosophy, cultural studies, literary and language studies, religious studies, drama and performance studies, cinema studies, and gender studies.

Doctoral Student Fellows of the Center participate with the Faculty Fellows in the Center’s weekly luncheon seminars as well as in other events during the year. Doctoral Student Fellows are also provided with shared office space at 20 Cooper Square for the duration of the fellowships. The aim of the residency is to allow students to finish their dissertations during the fellowship year.

Fellows are expected to be in residence in New York within the University community for the entire year of their residency. The weekly luncheon seminar is mandatory for all doctoral student participants. *M.

Students Only* The Graduate School offers a variety of support services for current graduate students seeking funding for short-term and long-term fellowship opportunities. These services include individualized fellowship advising, information sessions, grant writing workshops, and general application support.

Launched in September 2014 by Dean Allyson Green as a pilot effort to identify and establish a set of best practices, the Tisch Initiative for Creative Research serves as a research nexus, supporting and highlighting inter-disiciplinary and collaborative research led by Tisch faculty and students.
