HMGCC's Co-Creation programme is seeking machine learning that identifies and labels electronic components in x-ray images and assesses their likely function. The aim is to help bomb disposal operatives find triggers in complicated or unclear circuits. The challenge targets a TRL 5 demonstrator, with a demonstration, software, source code and a report as deliverables.
Essential requirements include traceable, explainable outputs with confidence scores, usability by trained operators who are not component specialists, operation on commercial hardware, support for TIFF and JPEG images, and analysis of through-hole components. Desirable features include offline operation, retraining on labelled data, surface-mount component analysis and structured reports.
The winner receives training data, and applicants should avoid proprietary datasets. The total budget is up to £60,000, about US$80,000, excluding VAT, for up to two proposals, and HMGCC covers time and materials, overheads and indirect costs. Projects last 12 weeks with kick-off targeted for December 2026.
Applicants are notified on 10 November, pitch day is 19 November and outcomes are due 23 November 2026. Applications close on 29 October 2026.

The Office of Naval Research Long Range Broad Agency Announcement (BAA N00014-25-S-B001) is ONR's primary solicitation for basic and applied research proposals, accepting submissions on a rolling basis through September 30, 2026. ONR's AI priorities center on autonomous maritime systems, human-machine teaming, and machine learning for sensor fusion. Individual awards typically range from $100,000 for exploratory research to $2 million for larger applied programs. The BAA covers all ONR science and technology departments, with AI-related research falling under key areas including ocean battlespace sensing, command-decision-superiority, and warfighter performance. This is the broadest entry point for academic researchers and companies seeking ONR funding for AI and autonomous systems research, complementing the more targeted Young Investigator Program and MURI solicitations.
DARPA-PS-26-141 (Atomically Precise Molecules) takes required abstracts October 27, 2026 and full proposals December 18. It is an Other Transaction for Prototype, which bars FFRDCs, UARCs, and national labs from the prime slot — and the government furnishes the device, so there is nowhere to hide a weak material.
Read articleThe FY2026 COPS Technology and Equipment Program makes $401.4 million available for law enforcement technology, equipment, and interoperable communications — with no local match and a July 16 deadline. But it is a noncompetitive, invitational program: only entities named in the Congressional earmark schedule can apply. Here is how TEP actually works, why it dwarfs the competitive COPS programs, and what agencies not on the list should do instead.
Read articleOn June 8, HHS and GSA launched a new Grants Management Special Item Number — SIN 518210GM — creating a government-wide buying lane for modern, standards-compliant grants software tied to more than $1.2 trillion in annual awards. It reads like procurement plumbing. For grantees, govtech vendors, and the future of grant data interoperability, it is anything but.
