Habitat for Humanity of Greater Garland’s Home Repair Program works to alleviate substandard living conditions and to preserve the existing affordable housing stock through critical home repairs.

The repairs are considered critical when they improve the health, safety, and/or accessibility of residents and their homes. This program serves low income families (below 80% of the Dallas County Area Median Family Income), people with disabilities, seniors and veterans. Habitat will provide the necessary funds and effectively manage the project for eligible homeowners.

A few of the programs we currently provide are listed below. Veteran Home Repair Programs Our affiliate strongly believes that we should protect the homes of those who have kept our nation safe. Currently, we have access to grants that allow us to complete home repairs for Veterans at no cost to the Veteran.

We are qualified to administer the following home repair grants: Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) Housing 4 Texas Heroes – Assists Texas Veterans and their families in maintaining or improving housing.

Housing Assistance for Veterans (HAVEN) from Federal Home Loan Bank – Funds assist with necessary modifications to homes of U.S. veterans and active-duty, reserve or national guard service members who became disabled by as a result of their military service since September 11, 2001. Funds can also be awarded to Gold Star Families.

Owens Corning Veteran Roof Replacements – Funds roof replacements for U.S. Veterans Amy Young Barrier Removal – TDHCA TDHCA , the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs , provides one-time grants of up to $22,500 to People with Disabilities through the Amy Young Barrier Removal Program (AYBR).

In a Household’s construction contract, a minimum of 75% of the program funds must represent accessibility modifications; Accessibility modifications involve the removal of physical barriers in the home or the addition of features that are necessary, based on the nature of the disability, to allow the person with disability to enjoy the full use of their home.

No more than 25% of the program funds may go towards eliminating health and safety concerns, i.e. eliminating life-threatening hazards or correcting unsafe conditions.

Accessibility modifications may include, but are not limited to the following: Handrail and ramp installation Counter top and cabinet height adjustment Accessible shower, toilet, and sink installation Buzzing or flashing device installation for persons with visual or hearing impairments Health and Safety conditions include, but are not limited to: Faulty, damaged or non-compliant electrical system, gas-fueled systems, heating and cooling systems, plumbing systems, smoke, fire and carbon monoxide detection/alarm Structural systems on the verge of collapse or failure Absence of adequate emergency and fire egress Environmental hazards such as mold, lead-based paint, asbestos or radon City of Rowlett Owner Occupied Housing Rehabilitation Program The City of Rowlett partnering with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Garland (HFHGG), provides financial assistance for low to moderate income residents to enable decent, safe, and sanitary housing.

The program provides limited assistance in the form of a five (5) year forgivable loan to accomplish health and safety Critical Home Repairs. This project is managed through HFHGG. *It should be noted this is not a home renovation program; i.e. repairs solely aesthetic in nature are not considered eligible.
