DIGITAL-EMERGING-51 is the 2026 Work Programme's main entry for AI inside the factory, jointly steered by the Made in Europe and the AI, Data and Robotics partnerships, and its scope is narrower and more demanding than the usual AI-for-industry topic.
Proposals must develop explainable AI solutions addressing at least two of three areas: optimising process parameters and reducing environmental impact; detecting process anomalies to prevent defects; and maximising the use of regenerated material.
The explainability requirement is load-bearing rather than decorative - manufacturing process engineers will not accept a black-box recommendation that alters a production line, and the evaluation reflects that. The at-least-two-of-three rule also rules out single-purpose proposals: a pure defect-detection project will be judged incomplete.
Named technologies include deep learning, large language models, digital twins, synthetic data and data-driven process models, and the circularity angle around regenerated material is where this topic diverges most sharply from generic predictive-maintenance work.
The maturity trajectory is specified: activities start at TRL 4 to 5 and must reach TRL 6 by project end, which means industrial pilot lines and real production data are required, not laboratory demonstrations. Timing is the critical caveat.
The topic opened 16 December 2025 with a stage one deadline of 17 March 2026 and a stage two deadline of 13 October 2026, and only consortia that cleared stage one may submit at stage two - new applicants cannot enter at this point.
Teams interested in this space should treat the topic as a template for the successor call in the 2027 Work Programme and begin partner-building now, since a five-partner industrial consortium with pilot-line access is not assembled quickly.

Or search similar grants →According to the current listing, eligibility includes: Standard Horizon Europe consortium rules apply: proposals require a minimum of three independent legal entities, with at least one established in an EU Member State and two others established in different Member States or Associated Countries. Entities established in Russia, Belarus and non-government controlled territories of Ukraine are not eligible to participate. The topic is a Research and Innovation Action under Cluster 4 (Digital, Industry and Space), contributing to the co-programmed Made in Europe and AI, Data and Robotics European Partnerships, so consortia are expected in practice to combine manufacturers or production-line operators, technology providers and research organisations. Proposals must develop explainable AI solutions addressing at least two of the following: optimising process parameters and reducing environmental impact of manufacturing processes; detecting process anomalies to prevent defects; and maximising the use of regenerated material. Relevant technologies named include deep learning, large language models, digital twins, synthetic data and data-driven process models. Activities are expected to start at Technology Readiness Level 4 to 5 and to reach TRL 6 by the end of the project, implying access to industrial pilot environments and real production data. The topic budget is EUR 30,000,000 with an EU contribution of EUR 4,000,000 to EUR 6,000,000 per project and approximately five projects expected. The topic opened 16 December 2025; the stage one deadline was 17 March 2026 and the stage two deadline is 13 October 2026, with stage two restricted to consortia invited after stage one evaluation. New applicants cannot enter for this cycle. Confirm the topic budget, deadlines and full eligibility conditions on the official EU Funding and Tenders Portal. Confirm the full requirements in the official notice before applying.
The current listing shows the topic budget is EUR 30,000,000 with an EU contribution of EUR 4,000,000 to EUR 6,000,000 per project and approximately 5 projects expected. Converted at prevailing exchange rates that is roughly USD 4,400,000 to USD 6,600,000 per project, and amount_min and amount_max are set to those figures. As a Research and Innovation Action the EU contribution funds 100 percent of eligible direct costs plus a 25 percent flat-rate indirect cost, so unlike an Innovation Action there is no differential co-funding penalty for industrial partners - a genuine advantage for manufacturers joining a consortium. Verify award ceilings, matching requirements, and allowable costs in the official notice.

The NSF CISE Future Computing Research (Future CoRe) program supports research in computing and communication foundations, intelligent systems, and network systems. The program funds innovative research that advances the frontiers of computing including artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing, and robotics. This is one of NSF's largest computing research programs with $280 million in total budget. Projects can address fundamental computing challenges, novel AI architectures, scalable intelligent systems, and next-generation network infrastructure.
