RFA-LM-26-004 is the National Library of Medicine's institutional training grant competition for predoctoral and postdoctoral programs in biomedical informatics, data science, and artificial intelligence and machine learning. NLM plans roughly 25 awards from a USD 12,000,000 pool, with awards between USD 500,000 and USD 775,000 and applications due 25 September 2026. The RFA covers both brand-new training programs and renewals of existing NLM-funded programs, which materially changes the competitive picture: incumbents with track records of trainee placement are competing in the same pool as new entrants, and new programs need to show institutional depth that renewals can simply document. NLM asks for cutting-edge, forward-looking training experiences that prepare trainees to attack complex health problems with computational methods, and explicitly values interdisciplinary designs that pull together computer science, statistics, clinical and biological perspectives rather than housing training inside a single department. This is one of the largest sustained federal pipelines for AI-in-health workforce development, and because it is a T-series institutional mechanism it is administered by the institution rather than an individual investigator. The Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) provides temporary housing and care for children who arrive in the United States alone. These are children who are under 18 years old, don't have legal permission to be in the U.S., and don't have a parent or legal guardian in the U.S. who can take care of them. ORR runs the Home Study and Post-Release Services Program to help these children. Before placing a child with a sponsor, ORR carefully checks potential homes to make sure they're safe and appropriate. After placement, ORR provides ongoing support to help children and their sponsors succeed. This support helps children adjust to living with their sponsor, connect with their community, stay safe and healthy, and navigate the immigration court process. The goal of the NHLBI Catalyze Program is to provide a comprehensive suite of support and services to facilitate the transition of basic science discoveries into viable diagnostic and therapeutic candidates that have been cleared for human testing, and to develop translational researchers fluent in product development and entrepreneurship. This specific Catalyze Product Definition initiative will provide the early stage translational support needed for the activities required to develop and test device prototypes, identify diagnostic disease targets and develop associated assays, and develop research tools to treat HLBS diseases and disorders. This is a phased initiative for early stage projects. The R61 phase provides support to identify and test initial prototype designs, to identify a disease target and generate experimental design, and to identify, test and pilot research tools. The R33 phase provides support for continued prototype development and testing, in addition to modifying design features and user feedback, diagnostic product generation, exploration of assay components, and characterization of a load design, and research tool improvement, large trial testing and data integration. Following successful completion of the program, it is expected that the potential products will be poised to move forward for in vivo testing (optimization, safety, efficacy) with additional support from NIH and/or other federal and private programs. This initiative has a companion initiative that supports development of therapeutics and combination products and is also part of a suite of innovation grants to advance projects to the point where they can meet the entry criteria for the NHLBI Catalyze Preclinical Program.
