I am pleased to announce that the Healthcare Services Group Charitable Foundation (HSGCF) board of directors has once again approved a $125,000 budget to award Patient Safety Grants to Missouri Hospital Plan (MHP) member hospitals in 2027. Each member hospital may apply for up to $25,000 through either one grant application or multiple applications combined.

In order to allow an opportunity for all MHP member hospitals to participate in the Patient Safety Grant program, prior grant recipients may not reapply for three years: 2023 recipients may apply again in 2026 for 2027 funding; 2024 recipients may apply again in 2027 for 2028 funding. 2025 recipients may apply again in 2028 for 2029 funding. 2026 recipients may apply again in 2029 for 2030 funding.

Patient Safety Grants will be awarded for projects that improve quality, reduce patient harm and/or improve patient outcomes for Missouri Hospital Plan members. The program objective is to encourage and support member efforts in developing and implementing innovative patient safety and quality initiatives in a collaborative process with physicians.

Projects should aim to reduce or eliminate the risk of adverse events and improve patient care. The grant application process opens August 17, 2026, with applications due by October 16, 2026, and awards to be announced in late November 2026. Funding priority will be given to proposals that are original, evidence-based, and directly aimed at improving patient safety and reducing professional liability claims.

The HSGCF and HSG Risk Management and Patient Safety Division worked closely together to develop this grant opportunity for MHP member hospitals and are very excited to support our member hospitals in their efforts to improve patient safety. Throughout this process, the Foundation and Risk Management staff will be available to provide technical assistance and feedback to applicants and recipients.

Applicant must be willing to share project information and outcomes with others. Applicant must agree to submit Quarterly Progress Reports. Application must include a letter of support from the organization’s CEO/Administrator.

Application must include a letter of support from senior leadership of each collaborating partner, if applicable. Application must identify a Project Coordinator. Application project must be adaptable for use by other facilities or physician practices.

Application must be submitted via email no later than October 16, 2026. Applicants may submit draft applications for review and assistance from HSG Risk Management staff. This is not a requirement of the grant process and does not guarantee eligibility, a particular score, or an award.

In order to be considered, all applications must be submitted by October 16, 2026, via email to athompson@hsg-group. com . Applications must include the cover sheet, projection allocation, proposed project budget (which is located at https://hsg-group.

com/patient-safety-grant/ ), CEO or administrator letter of support, collaborating partner letters (if applicable) and any permitted attachments. HSG will announce grant awards. Certification page must be submitted by CEO of grant recipients.

Grant recipients may submit initial payment requests of up to 75% of the grant award between January 1 - April 9. Initial payment requests in excess of 75% require a special request. Initial Progress Report due to HSG.

(Report forms will be sent to recipients March 1, 2027.) Applicants may request remainder of grant award after April 9th Progress Report is submitted. 2nd Quarter Progress Report due to HSG.

(Report forms will be sent to recipients June 2, 2027.) 3rd Quarter Progress Report due to HSG. (Report forms will be sent to recipients on September 1, 2027.)

Final Progress Report due to HSG. (Report forms will be sent to recipients December 1, 2027.) All applications that meet the Eligibility Criteria above will be scored by a team of independent reviewers using a competitive scoring process and related score sheets that correlate to the criteria below: (see the complete Scoring Guide here ) The problem statement clearly identifies a quality or patient safety concern for improvement.

The problem/needs statement is supported with baseline data/statistics or evidence to justify the need to address the problem. The project’s impact has significant potential for improved safety or outcomes in the population described. The project is innovative, evidence-based, and directly aimed at improving patient safety and reducing professional liability claims.

The project implements and evaluates strategies and tools that improve care. The project includes physician participation and includes a description of the physician(s) role. The project is adaptable for use by other facilities or physician practices.

The project plan and measure will support sustainability.
