S. foreign policy by bringing influential professionals from priority countries, including Nigeria, to the United States for ten months of graduate-level study and professional development.

Through graduate-level study and professional experiences at U.S. host universities and organizations, Humphrey Fellows gain practical insight into how American policies are developed and implemented, working alongside U.S. experts in their fields. of alumni have developed national policies, created national programs, served as national trainers, and advised government officials on legislation in their home countries.

I am very grateful for the flexibility and autonomy the program gives us. I took this opportunity to understand the dynamics of the philanthropic sector, the importance of grassroots movements, and funding led by the needs of the individuals and organizations.

Having a chance to participate in daily operations, strategic networking, and decision-making in the field of social change and philanthropy at the Gifford Foundation was a meaningful professional affiliation experience. I have now decided to transition in my career and work to transform unequal social structures, particularly in participatory democracy.

I came back to Brazil relying on the potential of local actions to bring about long-term outcomes, focusing on deep systemic change. As President of the Humphrey Alumni Association in the Philippines, I try to bring alumni together to collaborate and try influence how policies are implemented in the country. It doesn't have to be anything significant because a change in a small town, national parliament, the Department of Justice, or a university would have an impact.

I think that's what the Humphrey Fellowship is all about: not all of us may be in a position of national significance, but there is no big or small thing for a Humphrey Fellow. You do what you can with what you have and introduce change wherever possible.
