Humanity AI (Forthcoming Open Call)

Humanity AI is a forthcoming open call grant program from a coalition of foundations united under the Humanity AI initiative, which funds organizations working to ensure artificial intelligence is shaped by and for people rather than designed solely for profit.

The program aims to expand participation in AI design and governance decisions, strengthen organizations bringing communities together to shape AI's future, and support creation of public goods that put AI access and control in the hands of people. The forthcoming open call may broaden eligibility beyond initial organizational grantees to individuals working to align technology with democratic values.

Grant amounts and deadlines have not yet been announced.

Our future with AI can and will be what we make it. Humanity AI is uniting philanthropy in a broad coalition to build a more human(e) future in which AI is shaped by and for people. AI will be what we collectively make it People build it.

People use it. And people will benefit from its potential or suffer the harms it can cause. The choice in front of all of us is clear: will we allow AI to be designed only for profit, or will we invest in a future where people get to decide how, whether, and to what ends AI is used?

We know that AI is neither a poison nor a panacea. Digital technologies have already changed how we work, connect, and even find love. Now, we are told AI is on a similar but much faster, more pervasive, and inescapable trajectory in terms of the impact it will have on our lives.

But its potential to have deep cultural, social, and economic impact means that people and communities must shape our future with AI. People are demanding a stake in how AI shows up in our future. Humanity AI is answering that call.

By bringing the broadest coalition of philanthropic supporters together, Humanity AI aims to drive three levers to influence the present and future of this technology by: Expanding the group of people who make key decisions about AI design, development, deployment, and governance.
