Africa, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, US/Canada Brain Awareness Week is the global campaign to foster public enthusiasm and support for brain science. Through various activities, BAW raises awareness regarding the significant and positive impact of brain science on our daily lives. Activities may include outreach efforts directed at local schools, the establishment of advocacy groups, and events targeted at policymakers and the media.

The BAW campaign offers a distinctive platform for participants to highlight the importance of neuroscience research within their community, promoting understanding of brain science among people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.

Brain Awareness Week grants aim to bridge gaps in knowledge and promote global brain health awareness by supporting these outreach and awareness initiatives, particularly in regions challenged by a lack of resources, support, and public understanding of the brain.

We especially encourage interdisciplinary projects that highlight the connection between neuroscience and society and engage diverse audiences in meaningful discussions around not only the benefits but also the ethical, legal, and societal implications of neuroscience research.

Activities should emphasize DEI values as described in the ALBA Network’s guidelines for organizing a diverse conference and inclusive forms for gender and sexual diversity . Proposals must also align with IBRO’s visibility guidelines to maximize their potential for funding. Further resources and tools to aid you in your event planning can be found here .

Proposed BAW events may take place in countries anywhere outside of Europe. Organizers of activities taking place in Europe should apply through the dedicated FENS/Dana Brain Awareness Week Grants call for applications. Events must be held in 2027.

While not required to occur during the official Brain Awareness Week, they must align with and promote the global Brain Awareness Week campaign.

To ensure a comprehensive and fair evaluation of the received proposals, organizers are requested to provide the following information as part of their application: Hosting Organization Overview: A description of the hosting organization, its mission, objectives, and member distribution (national/regional).

Event Description: A detailed event description, including key details such as dates, venue, and history of past events (if applicable). Further information regarding brain awareness needs in the local community as well as a description of the target audience is also required. Funded Activity and Budget: A detailed description of the specific elements to be funded by the IBRO/Dana BAW grant, including a comprehensive budget.

Visibility: Specification regarding how IBRO and the Dana Foundation will be promoted before and during the event, including advertising, positioning of the logos, distribution of materials, etc. Curriculum Vitae (CV): A copy of the CV(s) of the main event organizer(s).

Supporting Documentation: Other additional documentation in support of the main application as needed, such as a copy of the provisional event program, list of speakers, etc. Diversity and Inclusion Efforts: An explanation of efforts undertaken to ensure gender and geographical diversity among event participants and speakers.

Terms and Conditions: Acknowledgement and acceptance of related terms and conditions concerning data sharing, economic sanctions and publicity. Ineligible costs include: Speakers salaries or honoraria Grant Payment and Reporting The funding report must be uploaded in the IBRO Grants Portal no later than three months following the conclusion of the event.

The grant will be awarded in an 80:20 format: 80% of the grant will be provided two months prior to the start date of the event, with the remaining 20% upon completion and submission of the associated grant report.
