Graduate Student Research Grants - IEEE Computational Intelligence Society IEEE Computational Intelligence Society Graduate Student Research Grants Graduate Student Research Grants 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗡𝗼𝘄 Closed The IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (CIS) invites applications for Graduate Student Research Grants.
The grants aim to support graduate students to undertake research visits during academic breaks by paying towards travel and living costs. Applications can be for research that relates to an identifiable component of CIS, such as neural networks, evolutionary computation and fuzzy systems. Successful grant applicants will receive financial support to conduct research during their academic break periods.
The aim of the grant is to support visits to another research institution for collaboration with an established researcher in the applicant’s field of interest, relevant to computational intelligence. In certain cases, the grant may also support intensive research work on a specific project at the applicant’s own institution, provided that the work is supervised by an established researcher at the institution.
An example is where, due to extenuating circumstances, such work is not feasible during regular academic semesters. Sufficient justification will be required in this case. The grant amount awarded will range from $1,000 to $4,000, depending on the budget requested for the proposed activities.
The total number of grants awarded each year depends on the budget approved by CIS AdCom. Renewal for continued support in the following year will only be considered if a sufficiently compelling justification is provided and approved. The funds may be used to cover travel, housing, and living expenses, but they CANNOT be used for stipends, salaries, conference travel, or the purchase of computers or other equipment.
Funds will be reimbursed on successful completion of the project on submission of receipts and certification from the primary research supervisor. Applicants must be Graduate Students and IEEE CIS student members at the time the grant is awarded.
The application must include a primary research supervisor who agrees to certify willingness to supervise the applicant on the proposed project and endorse the final project technical report upon its completion. To apply for the grant, applicants should complete the Submission Form online and attach the proposal as a single PDF file . Applications must be received no later than March 30, 2026 .
(Now Closed) The proposal must include the following content, in the order specified: 1. Cover page with the applicant’s address, student status, IEEE membership number, home institution, expected graduation date, host institution (if applicable), and the primary research supervisor for the grant. 2.
Detailed explanation of the proposed research to be conducted with the support of the grant (10pt font, 3-page maximum). 3. References related to the proposed research (10pt font, 1-page maximum).
4. Timeline of tasks required to achieve the proposed research goals. 5.
Detailed budget and justification , including individual line items with a justification for each requested item and amount (1-page maximum). If the work is to be conducted at the applicant’s home institution, explain why the funds are necessary to continue the work during break periods and why the work cannot proceed and be completed during regular academic semesters (additional 1-page maximum). 6.
Resume of the applicant (1-page maximum), including your IEEE membership number. 7. Two reference letters supporting the application, including one from the applicant’s current principal academic supervisor (if applicable).
The letters should be appended to the application proposal, rather than submitted separately. Note: Only if requested by the referee, reference letters may instead be sent directly to the Graduate Student Research Grants Sub-Committee Chair, to bypass the applicant as an intermediary. In such cases, the letters will not be viewable by the applicant.
Evaluation and selection will consider the following aspects: Technical quality, including relevance to computational intelligence, significance, and innovation Feasibility, including budget reasonableness Benefits to the CIS and beyond Qualifications and past performance of the applicant, including reference checks At the end of the Sponsored Project 1.
The primary research supervisor for the grant must provide a certification to the Graduate Student Research Grants Sub-Committee Chair, stating that the student has performed satisfactory research work as proposed and has met the goals set forth in the proposal. 2. Upon certification by the primary research supervisor, the student will receive the funds awarded.
3. The expectation is that the completed research will be presented at an IEEE conference. 4.
The final technical report in the format of a major CIS conference publication is due on December 1 of the award year, and should be emailed to the Graduate Student Research Grants Sub-Committee Chair. Deadline for submission of applications: March 30, 2026 (Now Closed) Notification for accepted proposals: May 11, 2026 The project work must be completed, and the funds must be spent by November 30, 2026.
