Impact Explorer 2025 | NWO 28-4-2026: the budget ceiling for this program has been retroactively increased by €302,000 to a total of €1,302,000. The purpose of this Call for Proposals, identically to the earlier Impact Explorer round, is to explore opportunities for societal impact arising from curiosity-driven research.
These are opportunities and ideas that were not anticipated in advance when the project plan was made, but have emerged during the lifetime of a project. The grant is intended for activities to validate the potential societal impact of discoveries from more curiosity-driven research from the Talent Line and Open Competitions of both NWO and ZonMw and to explore a route towards it.
Researchers with a running project in one of NWO or ZonMw's open competitions or talent line programmes can submit. An applicant may have one substantive submission within the Impact Explorer Call. Besides the main applicant Impact Explorer applications should be submitted with at least one Impact Partner.
For specific conditions see chapter 3. 1 in the call. Researchers can apply for a minimum of 20,000 and a maximum of 30,000 euro.
It is not possible to use it to extend or fund appointments of temporary academic staff. Proposals can be submitted to NWO on a continuous basis from 4 February 2025 until 3 February 2026 before 14:00:00 CET. An application will be assessed individually for: Appropriateness to the objective of the programme Quality and feasibility of the project plan See the call for details.
Each application is assessed individually whether it is of sufficient quality to be granted. This is done by means of a jury without referees. The main changes of this extension from the earlier Impact Explorer round 2023 are: Addition of collection times for proposals in continuous submission, as described in chapter 1.

Responsible research data management is an essential component of good research practice. Prepare a data management plan after the grant is awarded and before the project starts. NWO therefore encourages and facilitates researchers with various funding options, such as training courses, loans and grants for both individual researchers and teams.
Applications must be submitted through the Isaac application and reporting system. If you do not have an Isaac account yet, then please create one at least one workday in advance. More information about writing a proposal and which forms you need to use can be found in Isaac.

There is relatively limited space to elaborate in details. The jury is not composed of experts from your own field, so keep this in mind when writing the application. In addition, make sure you look for an Impact Partner as early in the process as possible.
You need to complete both the application form and obtain a letter of support from the Impact Partner. In the situation that your contract ends during the project, a statement appointment and project supervision is also required.
