The Merck Stimulating Innovative Research Grant Program 2026 includes a dedicated grant topic for artificial intelligence in cell culture media and process development, offering up to EUR 150,000 per year for up to 3 years. The program accelerates innovation through collaborative research, early engagement with industry experts, and translation of novel ideas into practical solutions. In 2026, priority areas also include in-vitro models for neuroinflammatory diseases (EUR 250,000/year for 2 years) and innovative approaches to contaminated materials remediation (EUR 150,000/year for 2 years). The two-stage application process begins with non-confidential submissions, followed by deep-dive workshops where finalists collaborate with Merck scientists and managers to jointly optimize proposals. The AI-specific grant focuses on applying machine learning and AI to optimize cell culture media formulation, bioprocess parameter optimization, and manufacturing quality control.
Eurostars-3 is a grant from the Eureka Network that funds international collaborative research and development projects led by innovative small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Operating under the Horizon Europe / European Innovation Ecosystems programme, it supports market-oriented development of cutting-edge products, processes, or services across sectors including agriculture, energy, information and communication technologies, and more. Eligible applicants must form a consortium of at least two partner organizations from two different Eurostars member countries, with an innovative SME leading the project. Swiss entities are eligible in 2025. The deadline for Cut-off 9 is September 4, 2025 (14:00 CEST). Funding amounts vary by country and national funding body.
The NSF Computer and Information Science and Engineering: Future Computing Research (Future CoRe) program (NSF 25-543) supports foundational computing research and education with a strong emphasis on AI and machine learning. The program funds research that advances the foundations of computing including AI/ML theory, algorithms, systems, and applications. Future CoRe supports small to medium-sized research projects that can have significant impact on computing foundations. The program has target dates of February 5, 2026 and September 10, 2026 for proposal submissions (note: these are target dates, not deadlines, meaning proposals may be submitted at any time but will be reviewed in batches around these dates). Investigators may not serve as PI, co-PI, or Senior/Key Personnel on more than two proposals submitted within any consecutive 12-month period across all Future CoRe programs. This is one of NSF's primary mechanisms for funding fundamental AI and machine learning research at U.S. academic institutions, covering areas such as machine learning theory, natural language processing, computer vision, robotics foundations, and human-AI interaction.
DARPA's DICE program (HR001126S0010) wants the theory and algorithms for a self-organizing collective of AI agents that stays on mission in contested environments with no central controller. It is a 36-month, simulation-only, three-technical-area BAA due August 25, 2026 — and it rewards a rare blend of distributed-systems theory and frontier-model inference control that almost no single lab has under one roof. Here is what DICE is really asking for, who is positioned to win, and how to build a team that can.
Read articleDARPA transferred its first autonomous-ready H-60Mx Black Hawk to the Army on March 20, capping a decade of ALIAS research. Now the same technology underpins an SBIR XL opportunity for small businesses building wildfire autonomy.
Read articleDARPA's FY26 SBIR Release 5 pre-releases August 5, 2026, opens August 26, and closes September 23 — a four-week window. The Department of War now pre-releases SBIR/STTR topics the first Wednesday of every month, turning DARPA solicitations into a predictable annual cadence you can plan around. The most valuable and least-used part is the three-week pre-release period, when you can talk directly to the topic authors before proposals open. Here is how to turn the monthly rhythm and the pre-release window into a real competitive edge.
