Energy Innovation Program - Natural Resources Canada Energy Innovation Program Advancing Canada’s clean energy future The Energy Innovation Program (EIP) advances clean energy technologies that will help Canada maintain a competitive, reliable, and affordable energy system while transitioning to a low-carbon economy.
It supports energy research, development & demonstration (RD&D) projects and other science-related activities by investing in the work of federal labs, as well as a wide range of Canadian businesses, utilities, Indigenous communities, and other organizations that are working to develop novel and innovative clean energy technologies, scale up and integrate existing technologies, and support the clean energy ecosystem by sharing information and knowledge.
Managed by the Office of Energy Research and Development (OERD) , calls for proposals under the EIP are shaped by regional, sector, and industry considerations as well as technical, market, and policy barriers and opportunities to advance clean energy innovation.
Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) Call for Proposals CCUS is a proven, crucial tool for reducing emissions in hard to decarbonize sectors. To help position Canada as a leader in CCUS solutions, this Call for proposals will support proponents undertaking the complex, resource‑intensive activities required to complete FEED studies for CCUS projects.
Innovation Ecosystem Enablers Call for Proposals: Process and Technology Testing Facilities To strengthen Canada's energy innovation infrastructure, this focus area will fund the establishment of new testing facilities and the expansion and modernization of existing facilities that provide broad-based, shared-use testing and validation services to energy innovators.
Advanced Materials for Energy and Defence Call for Proposals This call for proposals seeks to strengthen Canada’s critical minerals value chain and domestic materials production capabilities by advancing applied research and development (R&D) for materials and components targeting clean energy and defence-relevant applications.
Off-Site Construction Challenge Finalists will receive up to $180,000 in grant funding for the planning and development of their design. The winner will receive up to $10 million in contribution funding to help bring the design to life.
Artificial Intelligence for Canadian Energy Innovation Will fund applied research, development and demonstration (RD&D) of AI solutions that accelerate the pace of, and lower the costs associated with, energy technology innovation.
Clean Fuels Call for Proposals Will fund research, development, and demonstration proposals for the clean fuels value chain from the production of clean fuels to related technologies to facilitate transport and storage.
Mining Decarbonization Demonstration Call for Proposals Will fund mining demonstration projects in Canadian upstream to midstream operations to scale technologies, reduce emissions, and support low-carbon mineral supply chains.
National Energy Systems Modelling Call for Proposals Will fund projects that quantitatively model the role of innovative technologies in achieving emissions reductions and supporting Canada’s net-zero emissions targets. Renewable Energy Demonstrations Funds demonstration projects that will help advance innovative renewable heat or power generation and/or integration through novel applications that provide local benefits.
Battery Industry Acceleration Supports technologies that accelerate battery value chain decarbonization, security, and competitiveness for Canada. Methane Measurement and Mitigation Supports Canadian expertise to accelerate development of more effective knowledge and technologies for methane measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV), as well as the mitigation or elimination of methane emissions in Canada.
Provides support to the key technology, market, and regulatory innovations that address barriers in order to scale pilot projects into grid-wide deployments.
On-road Transportation Decarbonization Funds research, development, and demonstration projects that address technical and market barriers to the demonstration or deployment of zero/low-emission on-road medium & heavy-duty vehicles (MHDVs), increase the uptake of zero-emission on-road vehicles and improve the transportation system’s overall efficiency.
Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage Front-End Engineering Design Studies Supports Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) studies for carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) projects that have the potential to significantly mitigate emissions.
Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) RD&D Funds early-stage CCUS RD&D activities across three focus areas: Capture, Storage & Transportation, and Utilization. Clean Fuels and Industrial Fuel Switching Targets industrial fuel switching and production of clean fuels for use in hard-to-abate sectors, focusing specifically on three technology areas.
Canadian Emissions Reduction Innovation Network Aims to accelerate the development, validation and deployment of technologies that reduce oil and gas sector emissions. Breakthrough Energy Solutions Canada Supported advancements in clean energy technologies that could significantly reduce global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the manufacturing, electricity, transportation, and buildings sectors.
Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) OERD recognizes the importance of integrating Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) considerations into the design and delivery of EIP funding calls to ensure social, environmental, and economic benefits (both short-term, such as access to jobs and training, and long-term, such as increased affordability and accessibility of technologies) for diverse Canadians.
