Strengthening California Journalism We enrich and grow California’s news gathering ecosystem by encouraging inclusivity, collaboration and the ongoing support of quality journalism education. For over 140 years, the core mission of the California Press Foundation has been to strengthen the future of California journalism through a variety of grant and internship programs.
We aim to assure the future and integrity of California journalism by partnering with educators to help fund student journalism programs at all three levels, by recognizing and honoring contemporary achievements and by guarding the history and traditions of California journalism.
The California Press Foundation awards grants to select students who demonstrate an exceptional interest in pursuing careers in the media business in California. Our internship grant program helps develop mentorship and networking opportunities for students who are interested in a career in journalism. The students must secure an internship on their own at a California news company.
Internships, which can occur in spring, summer or fall, must be full-time and last at least six weeks. Check out the list of former interns. The California Press Foundation has issued equipment grants to more than 140 campus news programs since 2000.

Journalism Education Collaborative JOUR•Ed Collaborative , an interactive directory developed by Cal Press in partnership with the California State University, Northridge Journalism Department, serves as a modern interface between journalism education and the industry.
By offering a comprehensive and accessible repository of resources, the JOUR•Ed database streamlines the search for relevant programs, publications, and research to expand opportunities for journalism educators, professionals, and students alike. It’s free for educators and easy to use.
An additional feature available at no cost to educators is a Resource Library, which features full-semester instructional materials across four foundational courses: Introduction to Mass Media Race & Gender in the Media Designed to support journalism educators at every level, these resources enrich learning and help strengthen the pipeline into the profession. Membership with Cal Press is free and by individual, not company.
