It supports property managers and organizations ready to implement practical solutions and measure real results. The fund supports projects that improve how buildings operate by reducing energy and water use, cutting waste, and creating healthier environments for residents and tenants. The focus is on initiatives that can be implemented now and replicated across industries.
Grants may be awarded to IREM ® members, real estate managers, building owners, tenants, residents, students, and faculty of academic institutions. Preference is given to creative, innovative projects and to applicants who may not otherwise have the resources to put their ideas into action.
Applications are reviewed for anticipated reduction in energy or natural resource use, ability to measure results, demonstrated need, project impact, number of people impacted, and the ability to sustain results over time. Grant requests may range between $500 - $5,000. Start your application today!
Apply for an IREM Foundation grant On June 5, 2019, Elaina Tattersdale passed away after a short battle with cancer. At the young age of 35, she leaves behind two daughters and a devoted family including her parents, 2020 IREM President Cheryl Gray, CPM ® and Rick Gray. Elaina believed that one person could make a difference.
She worked as an enterprise project manager for Canada-based real estate firm, Morguard Investments. Her dream was to improve the impact buildings have on our environment by working in sustainability, but sadly, those doors never opened. To honor her passion, Elaina’s parents, Rick and Cheryl Gray, launched Elaina’s Sustainability Fund with a donation of $50,000 to the IREM Foundation in 2019.
Elaina’s Sustainability Fund grant recipients 2025 recipients EcoRise (Austin, TX) EcoRise’s Green Careers Academy connects underrepresented high school students to green career pathways through paid internships, mentorship, and sustainability projects. Hydroponic Venture Project (Chicago, IL) Introduces hydroponic growing systems in Chicago Public schools, combining sustainability with hands-on education.
The African American Society (Hamden, CT) Conduct a feasibility study and the development of detailed mockups to design a net-zero facility that meets the energy needs of a community center and positions it as a microgrid for local residents during emergencies.
2024 recipients EcoRise (Austin, TX) A continuation grant to provide microgrants to ten student-led sustainability projects nationwide that are disproportionately impacted by environmental stressors through the National Student Innovation Fund. Solar Village Project (Bowie, MD) Install solar panels at Harigovind Shukla Nirmala Devi Public School in rural Uttar Pradesh, India.
The solar power will generate electricity to help power water purification systems for students and teachers. 2023 recipients EcoRise (Austin, TX) A continuation grant to support student-led sustainability projects that improve school facilities and engage thousands of students in environmental solutions.
2022 recipients EcoRise (Austin, TX) Support students to develop innovative solutions to environmental issues on or near their school campus through school building improvements, cost savings, and sustainable solutions.
Provide building managers in multi-family residences with convenient composting solutions that reduce waste management costs, support sustainability goals, and engage residents through a mobile app that tracks and rewards their environmental impact. Small Tourism Accommodation Owners of Trinidad and Tobago (Trinidad and Tobago) Advances energy efficiency across small tourism properties through assessments and targeted upgrades.
Apple Patch Community (Louisville, KY) Support a weatherization demonstration pilot by creating a more comfortable environment and increasing sustainability through air sealing in a three-resident home at an Apple Patch Community.
Plant it Forward (Houston, TX) Procure two high efficiency walk-in cold storage units for the Plant it Forward food hub, which helps prevent food waste and strengthen the ability of small, family farmers to distribute fresh produce to a local delivery radius.
2021 recipients Virginia Tech University (Blacksburg, VA) Conduct research and develop case studies around best practices when implementing the IREM® Certified Sustainable Property (CSP) certification. Erin A.
Hopkins, PhD, Assistant Professor of Property Management at Virginia Tech University authors a research study-- Case Studies in the Implementation of IREM’s Certified Sustainable Property Program Download the research report Wastezon Smart Bin (Kigali, Rwanda) Develop and produce 30 smart bins for 30 residences in Kigali.
Each Wastezon Smart Bin will automate sorting, tracks waste decomposition, sterilizes odor, and provides real-time information to enable effective waste collection services.
The Vietnamese American Community of Austin, Texas (Austin, Texas) Produce educational materials to educate more than 12,000 Vietnamese residents in Austin how to conserve energy in their home with proper household maintenance, while also promoting household recycling. Zion Christian Academy (Ogbomosho, Nigeria) Install solar panels at Zion Christian Academy boarding school.
The solar energy will provide electricity to power lights, computers and running water for 200 students and staff at the compound. Riverview Apartments / Riverview Towers (Pittsburgh, PA) Build a community garden for low-income senior residents to plant and harvest herbs, vegetables and flowers.
