Jackson Investing in the songwriters of musical theatre to ensure creators have all they need to see their brave vision become important work The Jonathan Larson Grant is an unconditional annual investment in individual talent. The grant is awarded to musical theatre composers, lyricists, and librettists, or writing teams, early in their career, to support artistic endeavors and safeguard long-term music writing careers.

Jonathan Larson was a man who called downtown NYC home, relishing the bohemian life in the late eighties and early nineties. A life-long musical theatre lover, Larson worked tirelessly to develop his own musical vision for the stage. After nearly a decade of writing and composing, Larson’s rock musical “Rent,” a gritty urban update to Puccini’s “La Bohème,” premiered to enormous critical and popular success.

The show reflected Larson’s personal story as a struggling artist living in Alphabet City, getting by with the support of his contemporaries. Tragically, Larson passed away suddenly the night before previews for the show began. The inspiring nature and brave subject matter of “Rent,” however, gave the show a life of its own and established Larson as the voice of a new generation on stage.

The show, and its creator posthumously, won the 1996 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and four Tony Awards. “Rent” remains a celebrated musical and cultural touchstone today. The few grants Larson received inspirited him with the professional confidence to continue pursuing musical theatre and, ultimately, to finish “Rent.

” Today, Jonathan Larson Grants are awarded to musical writers with the potential to create work that shapes contemporary culture. We give writers free reign to put the grant’s resources towards what they see as the best use for furthering their creative endeavors with the hope that the grant will provide the support necessary for artists to see their work from concept to cultural success.

Thanks to the resources of the Jonathan Larson Performing Arts Foundation and the generosity of the Larson Family, the program will be sustained in a permanent home at the American Theatre Wing. APPLY HERE . Deadline is Friday, September 11th. Fouad Dakwar is a multimedia artist whose subversive comedy channels his Palestinian-American immigrant upbringing– all with a punk-rock twist.

His semi-autobiographical musical, Fouad of Nazareth, has been featured on the Playbill Songwriter Series, which aptly described him as “a darkly comic pop-punk composer on the rise.

” The piece was first developed in Berklee NYC’s Writing and Production for Musical Theater Master’s program, premiered to two sold-out concert fundraisers for the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund at Joe's Pub, was a semi-finalist for the 2025 Relentless Musical Award, and received a residency in the 2025 Johnny Mercer Foundation Writers Grove at Goodspeed.

Fouad of Nazareth's upcoming concept album was produced by Noor Theatre and recorded at the Power Station at Berklee NYC with support from Pop Culture Collaborative’s “Becoming America” grant. Laughter Lab Fellow, Joe’s Pub Council member, 2026 Kleban Prize librettist finalist, and 2023 Jonathan Larson Grant finalist (suffice it to say, he’s pretty damn grateful he made the cut this time around). Born in Nazareth, the laughter he evokes is Biblical Dan Fishback is a playwright and musician in NYC, with a two-decade body of work exploring the shadows of Jewish and queer life in the United States.

After early years presenting music and performance art in small clubs, Fishback began staging full-length plays at Dixon Place in 2009 with “You Will Experience Silence,” which reframed the Chanukah story in the context of the Iraq War, and was called “a forceful, often hilarious reflection on the politics of American occupation” by the Village Voice.

Fishback’s 2011 solo performance “thirtynothing” confronted the then-under-discussed history of the early AIDS epidemic, and sought to understand the meaning of gay mass death for gay men who were children in those terrifying years.

In 2012, his first musical “The Material World,” which found a family of Jewish socialist immigrants confronting the promise of Soviet utopianism in the 1920s, was called “quietly revolutionary” and “the best downtown musical in years” by Time Out New York.

The follow-up to “The Material World,” called “Rubble Rubble,” was scheduled for public presentation at The American Jewish Historical Society in 2017, but was canceled by that organization’s board after a right-wing smear campaign targeted Fishback for his Palestine solidarity activism. After a successful crowdfunding campaign, the reading was presented independently at New World Stages in 2018.

All four aforementioned plays were directed by Stephen Brackett. As a musician, Fishback began performing in NYC’s antifolk scene in 2003, releasing several albums, both solo and with his band Cheese On Bread, which dropped their most recent recording “The One Who Wanted More” in 2018, along with a video for their song “Bad Friend,” directed by legendary filmmaker Stephen Winter.

Fishback’s most recent solo recording, “Ill I - Laughing with Lizards,” was released in 2024, along with two music videos directed by Fishback, including a hand-animated short film for the subtitular track. In 2013, Fishback founded The Helix Queer Performance Network–an intergenerational programming platform designed to redress inequities in the world of queer arts and culture.

He directed Helix’s slate of festivals, workshops and public events at La MaMa Experimental Theater, BAX/Brooklyn Arts Exchange and the Hemispheric Institute of Performance & Politics through the platform’s conclusion in 2020. Helix’s flagship series, the annual festival “La MaMa’s Squirts: Generations of Queer Performance,” continues today.

In recent years, as Fishback has struggled with myalgic encephalomyelitis (also known as chronic fatigue syndrome or ME/CFS), he has reoriented his artistic practice towards disability justice, with the rock musical “Dan Fishback is Alive, Unwell & Living in His Apartment,” which was commissioned by Joe's Pub at the Public Theater in 2024.

In that same year, Fishback received the Vivace Award for musical theater from the Bret Adams & Paul Reisch Foundation. Fishback is a member of Jewish Voice for Peace and Jews for Racial and Economic Justice, and sits on the Joe's Pub Council.

Upcoming projects include: THE SNOW GOOSE, Noisemaker’s adaptation of Paul Gallico’s novella, will receive it’s world premiere this year at Goodspeed Musicals.

CEILIDH will open in the UK as part of Alan Cumming’s inaugural season at Pitlochry Festival Theatre in Scotland, before heading to London/UK national tour. And PORTER, a new commission from Signature Theatre, VA, will begin development in collaboration with renowned NY theater ensemble Fiasco. ADAM J.

RINEER is a composer, writer, music director, and artistic leader dedicated to new musical theatre and interdisciplinary performance. Adam's works include THIRD SEX: 1930s transvestite lieder, A Trip to the Moon, barbara/tony, FLATLAND, DISCO DEMO, and Bitchfest: LIVE!.

Their work has been developed and presented at Ars Nova, Johnny Mercer Writers Grove, HERE Arts Center, Musical Theatre Factory, Pete's Candy Store, The Parkside Lounge, PRISM Festival/The Makers' Ensemble, Prima Theatre, CAP21, and Temple University. Adam is currently an Artist in Residence at Ars Nova and The Civilians, as part of their R&D Group.

Born and raised in Singapore, Cheeyang Ng is a singer-songwriter who writes at the intersection of queer, Asian and immigrant stories. They are proud to be receiving the 2024 Jonathan Larson Grant. They have performed around the world, including Lincoln Center with Carole King and Carnegie Hall with Jason Robert Brown.

They are the first Singaporean to headline a concert at Joe's Pub and Millennium Stage at Kennedy Center showcasing their original music and their songs have been performed across the U.S. Creator of podcast East Side Story and vocal group The Lunar Collective, they have won multiple vocal awards all across Asia, including Singapore, Taiwan and China.

Most recently in Knoxville he was the music assistant to Stephen Flaherty on the Clarence Brown Theatre’s production of KNOXVILLE. As an actor he has performed regionally in Raleigh (North Carolina Theatre, Theatre Raleigh) and Nashville (Nashville Repertory Theatre). He is a member of AGMA and sings regularly in professional choirs such Musica Sacra(Kent Tritle), Essential Voices USA (Judith Clurman), and the choirs of St.

John the Divineand Temple E-Manuel. He’s also the resident music director for the Voice Studio of Katy Wolfe. His work has been showcased in concert at venues such as Joe’s Pub, 54 Below, and Millennium Stage at Kennedy Center.

com Joriah Kwamé is a NYC-based multi-hyphenate musical artist with a deep passion for Musical Theatre. He is most known for writing the viral song "Little Miss Perfect" , of which he is developing a stage musical of the same name. He was selected for the DreamWorks Theatricals, MTI & NBC Universal Emerging Writers Program and is creating a stage adaptation of TROLLS .

With fellow Jonathan Larson winners Pasek and Paul, he co-wrote "Top Of The World" for the Sony Pictures film Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile , performed by Shawn Mendes. His rock opera KILL THE WHALE: A MUSICAL ODYSSEY has seen development in the Polyphone Festival, Yaddo, SPACE on Ryder Farm, Corkscrew Festival, NYU, the Melville bi -Centennial Conference, and Nantucket Theatre Workshop.

The project began as a concept album in January 2015, and has taken nine years to complete, and will be released as a white vinyl double LP nearly 100 minutes in length, pressed by Gotta Groove Records, in concert at Joe’s Pub in April 2024 alongside the full recording cast. Other composing credits include the multi-lingual score to Neil Bartlett’s The Plague at Hong Kong Arts Festival 2021.

In 2022 and 2023 Daniel workshopped a brand new original musical about the Freudian dreamspace , and began work on an untitled autobiographical musical film, as an artist-in-Residence at Culture Lab at the Plaxall Gallery in Queens and at the Good Hart Residency in Michigan, respectively. Daniel has received a 2023 Queens QAF grant. Daniel tours as a banjoist, and writes down every dream he can remember.

Jacinta Clusellas, Tatiana Pandiani and Melis Aker Since meeting over ten years ago in New York City, Jacinta Clusellas, Melis Aker, and Tatiana Pandiani have cultivated a friendship and artistic collaboration resulting in the original, bilingual, and Latin American musical, AZUL . The project began after Clusellas released her debut album “El Pájaro Azul” in 2015.

The album, inspired by Ruben Darío’s short stories and poems, captivated Pandiani who immediately knew it to be fertile source material for an original book musical, and recruited Aker to join the writing team. Since then, the three women have grown alongside the project and have taken it to renowned venues across the United States.

AZUL has been developed with support from institutions such as the National Music Theatre Conference at the O’Neill Center, New York Theatre Workshop, The Drama League, National Alliance of Musical Theatre (NAMT), The Catwalk Institute, Goodspeed Writer Grove / Johnny Mercer Foundation, Tofte Lake Center.

christiebaugher. com Paris Ray Dozier (Music & Lyrics) is a composer & lyricist from Los Angeles, California, whose Musical Theatre productions have opened across the United States. Dozier's career began when he was 15, after attending the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute.

He went on to write songs for artists on Disney Music Group's Hollywood Records, where he was also signed as a singer-songwriter and producer. After Hollywood Records, Dozier headed up the music department for B InTune TV, which broadcasted to 100 million households worldwide on NBC and Fox.
