**WASHINGTON, D. C. —**The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) today announced $30 million in funding across three programs that will help Americans save on energy costs, develop ultra-high-density energy storage systems for a range of national security technologies, and support America’s next generation of energy innovators.
“This $30 million in new projects reinforces ARPA-E’s commitment to drive American energy innovation at every scale. The selections announced today will help cut future energy costs for Americans, develop breakthroughs in batteries to deliver a decisive advantage to American security and industry, and help the next generation of brilliant minds make their ideas into reality,” said **ARPA-E Director Conner Prochaska**.
_Testing Groundbreaking Energy Storage Technologies_ ARPA-E announced nearly $15 million for 6 projects in Phase 2 of the Jumpstart Opportunities to Unleash Leadership in Energy Storage with 1K Energy Storage Systems (JOULES-1K) program. These are projects from the first phase of JOULES-1K that demonstrated the most promise to develop energy storage chemistries in 1 kWh test articles and thorough 1MWh hour performance and cost models.
JOULES 1K targets “1K-class” systems capable of achieving energy density equal to or exceeding 1,000 watt-hours per kilogram and 1,000 watt-hours per liter at end of life and at the net-energy system level. To reach these thresholds, JOULES 1K technologies must be fundamentally distinct from conventional battery approaches and could increase energy density by 4x compared to today’s state-of-the-art storage systems.
Success would enable dramatic improvements in the performance of drones, robots, Electrical Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft, and other applications that would benefit from ultra-high-density storage systems.
ARPA-E announced $5 million for 4 projects under the Galvanizing Leaps in Advanced Super INsulating Glass (GLASING) program to research new technologies to cut energy costs for homeowners and businesses by developing window technology that prevents energy loss.
These projects will develop low-cost, high-performance vacuum insulated glazing (VIG) that will deliver triple the thermal performance of today’s widely used double-pane windows while maintaining competitive costs and optical clarity. This breakthrough translates into lower energy bills for American families and businesses. Today’s mass market windows use 50-year-old technology.
GLASING technologies will help make high-performance windows affordable and practical for new construction and existing buildings, which will help Americans save on their future energy bills. _Backing Early Career Energy Innovators_ ARPA-E announced up to $10 million for 18 early career energy innovators selected for its 2025 Inspiring Generations of New Innovators to Impact Technologies in Energy (IGNIITE) program.
IGNIITE backs early-career scientists and engineers whose work can turn disruptive, unconventional, high-risk, high-reward ideas into transformative technologies.
Each 2025 IGNIITE project is eligible for up to $500,000 to pursue innovations across a range of technical areas, including critical minerals and advanced materials, geothermal energy, fusion concepts, battery and component manufacturing, industrial and water efficiency systems, grid and oil and gas technologies.
Learn more about the selected projects for 2025 IGNIITE, GLASING selected projects, GLASING program, JOULES-1K selected projects, and JOULES-1K program on the ARPA-E website. _Selection for award negotiations is not a commitment by DOE to issue an award or provide funding.
Before funding is issued, DOE and the applicants will undergo a negotiation process, and DOE may cancel negotiations and rescind the selection for any reason during that time. _

The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program at ARPA-E is a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy that funds small businesses developing transformational energy technologies. Phase I awards reach up to approximately $314,363 for initial feasibility research, while Phase II awards can reach approximately $2,095,748 for further development. ARPA-E SBIR also connects to SCALEUP, ARPA-E's early commercialization program, for technologies ready to scale toward market. Eligible applicants are U.S. small businesses with innovative energy technology concepts spanning clean power, energy storage, transportation, and related areas. Applications are submitted through the DOE Funding Opportunity Exchange, and ARPA-E emphasizes high-impact, high-risk technology development that could reshape the energy landscape.
Seeding Critical Advances for Leading Energy technologies with Untapped Potential (SCALEUP) Ready is sponsored by U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E). Supports the scaling of high-risk and potentially disruptive new technologies across the full spectrum of energy applications. This NOFO focuses only on scale-up and pre-pilot projects of promising technologies that ARPA-E has previously funded.
On August 24, 2026, DOE and SBA signed a memorandum of agreement creating the Small Business Investment Company-Energy Initiative, pointing a $58 billion SBA-leveraged investment program at DOE's technology priorities. No application, no NOFO, no deadline. Here is how SBIC capital actually works, why a January 2026 rule change made this possible, and what a company sitting on a DOE Phase II award should do about it.
Read articleThe Hydrocarbons and Geothermal Energy Office's University Training and Research program funds coal, oil and gas, and geothermal R&D at U.S. colleges and universities — but every proposal must include a non-academic partner and must build training modules that outlive the award. The LOI deadline is October 1, 2026, with full applications 15 days later. Here is what that compressed window means and why the workforce framing changes what a competitive proposal looks like.
Read articleOn April 20, 2026, the White House declared grid, natural gas, LNG, petroleum, and coal 'essential to national defense,' unlocking DPA Title III loans, loan guarantees, and purchase commitments through DOE. Here is how this non-traditional financing works, who qualifies, why the September 30 sunset matters, and how energy companies and their supply chains should position now.
