Journalism and Power Building Initiative is sponsored by Democracy Fund. This initiative invests in newsrooms that advance pro-democracy movements and expanding campaigns and organized efforts to change journalism. It aims to transform journalism to advocate for fairness, inclusion, and justice, supporting communities of color to create media that strengthens the movement for an inclusive, multiracial democracy.

Journalism and Power Building Journalism is more than a way to share information — it can be a way to spark pro-democracy movements. When reporters are deeply involved with the communities they report for and about, there is a greater understanding of what information drives people to become civically engaged and anti-racist.

To produce journalism that advocates for fairness, inclusion, and justice, we must first transform the way journalism operates. We champion the power of journalists and publishers to support communities of color to create media that strengthens the movement for an inclusive, multiracial democracy.

In the instance of a grantee approaching a member of our staff for comment, we require them to go through our communications team — not a program officer — and we alert the reporter of the funding relationship. We also request that if they quote a member of our team they disclose our funding of their organization in any story produced.
