Outline | Bilateral Programs | Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Joint Research Projects/Seminars The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) carries out bilateral cooperative programs between Japan and counterpart countries based on agreements concluded with academies, research councils and other science-promotion organizations in those countries.
The aim of these programs is to form sustained networks evolved from individual scientist exchanges including young scientists. JSPS provides financial support to Japanese scientists implementing such bilateral joint research projects and seminars between research teams from Japan and counterpart countries.
The Bilateral Joint Research Projects/Seminars are comprised of two components: (A) Bilateral Joint Research Projects/Seminars with JSPS’s Counterpart Agencies and (B) Open Partnership Joint Research Projects/Seminars.
Open Partnership Joint Research Projects/Seminars provide Japanese researchers an opportunity to conduct research/seminar with researchers around the world who reside in a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan. (JSPS also treats researchers who reside in Taiwan and Palestine in this manner.)

All fields of the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. Under the scheme of (A) Program, some countries (counterpart agencies) have specified application fields. For details, please check the Application Guidelines on JSPS's website.
Expenses supported by JSPS JSPS consigns the administration of projects to the Japanese team leader's affiliated institution. When using funds, please follow JSPS's rules. JSPS does not pay the institution a consignment fee.
JSPS covers the following expenses of researchers on the Japanese team: International travel, Domestic travel, other expenses (Consumables, honoraria, printing, communication), <for Seminar scheme> Meeting expenses (in Japan), Under the scheme of (A) Bilateral Joint Research Projects/Seminars with JSPS's Counterpart Agencies, JSPS may support the funds to cover the cost of a counterpart team's stay in Japan based on the agreement with individual counterpart agencies.
For (B) Open Partnership Joint Research Projects/Seminars, JSPS does not support the expenses for overseas counterpart team. (A) Bilateral Joint Research Projects/Seminars with JSPS's Counterpart Agencies Joint Research: 1-3 years, ¥1-2. 5 million a year per project Joint Seminars: within 1 week, ¥1.
