justice squared teams | JUSTICE SQUARED What Makes the JUSTICE SQUARED Opportunity Special? You receive resources, skill-building and accompaniment over two years. Build trustworthy and trust-restoring relationships and governance between healthcare organizations and communities Create deep and durable change to address a root cause of health inequity, structural racism Creating true structural and systemic change is hard.
We make a complex journey easier to navigate.
A learning pathway that breaks up the work into stages to learn and build your local JUSTICE SQUARED collective process Two shifts we will apply the work to as a way to learn Real world case studies and immersive learning environments A team of skilled faculty and accompaniers from around the nation who bring decades of collective experience in healthcare and community to this work, who understand both where things can get hard and know that real change is possible A pool of curated opportunities to support you on the journey based on the unique needs of your team Access to a wide pool of curated technical assistance partners in everything from technical aspects of system change to address structural racism to building nonviolent communications to racial healing Site visits to bright spots across the nation We create this journey in community.
An asset-based approach that calls in the gifts of doing this work in partnership with communities experiencing inequities Processes and implementation support to build collective leadership in your healthcare organization and community at the local level Immersive community-building through Justice and Equity Leadership Academies (JELAs) Peer groups with other healthcare organizations who are working on the same shifts Affinity groups based on your interests, roles, and identities Mutual aid across our community and with a wider ecosystem of changemakers committed to creating real change We know that to change the world we have to change ourselves.
We build time, tools, and supports for you to reflect at the individual, team, institutional and community level processes and systems–to “see” and “feel” how racism shows up, who it may be disadvantaging, and what it might look like to address it We know everyone will be in a different stage of their equity journey and have built in supports for people to advance wherever they might be, while building a common foundation for everyone.
We offer a “no judgment” brave zone where people and teams can grow while gently helping you to see the blind spots We take both the joy and the justice seriously. We know that this work requires generational change. To sustain ourselves on this journey, it is important to celebrate and to be in joy and community.
We build this into the process. We offer different ways to care for yourself and your team on the journey, from resilience circles to somatic archaeology We celebrate the wins–and the fail forward moments. What matters is not that we get it perfect–what matters is that we engage in this work from a humble posture of learning and are willing to change and be changed.
JUSTICE SQUARED Learning and Action Journey? JUSTICE SQUARED teams will go on a transformation journey that includes five transformational leadership academies to build skills and relationship and five action periods between leadership academies to put the “how” into practice, supported by coaching, webinars, peer support, and virtual resources.
JUSTICE SQUARED Core teams will consist of five (5) multidisciplinary team members across healthcare and community: This core team will be asked to take the BEACON for JUSTICE Team Assessment and will use this tool throughout its journey. What Teams can Expect From JUSTICE SQUARED: A guided and structured journey to address structural racism within their healthcare system through the two shifts.
A team of coaches and mentors who will walk beside them, help them make progress, and connect them to additional resources. An online community of relevant technical assistance resources to help your local collective make progress and sustain themselves. A peer community made up of leading healthcare-community collaborations across the country.
Funding $300,000 over 2 years ($400,000 for safety net institutions). What JUSTICE SQUARED will be Expecting from You: To engage actively in the JUSTICE SQUARED journey, attending at least 80% of all leadership academies. To actively work with coaches and technical assistance supports.
To connect your extended team and local collective to online tools and resources to make progress and engage in joy and resilience activities. Active engagement and support of other teams during peer group activities. Coinvestment of $100,000 for non-safety institutions (see below).
Funding and Co-Investment We are asking healthcare organizations to co-invest with us in building a racially just healthcare organization. Why? Because we believe this work requires long-term commitment and shared investment to do this work.
We recognize that safety net institutions have already been demonstrating this investment through their core model. Teams will receive a grant of $300,000* over the two-year period ($400,000 for safety net institutions) through WE in the World to advance their collective leadership and systems change initiative.
Match for non-safety net institutions: We are asking healthcare organizations to co-invest about $100,000 in matching resources (a combination of financial and in-kind) to support these teams as part of demonstrating readiness and leadership commitment to engage in the process.
For safety net institutions and nonprofits with budgets under $5 million who are serving a disproportionately underserved population with significant health inequities, this match will be provided by JUSTICE SQUARED. For both types of institutions, we are looking for deep executive leadership commitment and active engagement of the entire core team in the JUSTICE SQUARED Journey.
