Homebuyer Assistance Program | Kalamazoo County, MI Create a Website Account - Manage notification subscriptions, save form progress and more. Homebuyer Assistance Program Homebuyer Assistance Program To help address the housing crisis in our community, the Kalamazoo County Treasurer and Independent Bank have partnered to create the Kalamazoo County Homebuyer Assistance Program.
Through this program, eligible applicants can receive up to $5,000 from the Treasurer in down payment assistance and up to $2,000 from Independent Bank for closing costs.
To qualify for the Homebuyer Assistance Program, an applicant must: Purchase a primary residence in Kalamazoo County; Have qualifying household income at or below 120% of the county's Area Median Income; For details, please refer to the Area Median Incomes table below from the County's Housing department.
Attend pre-purchasing counseling; Receive financing through Independent Bank; and Contribute at least $1,000 towards the purchase of the home. To get started, please contact Independent Bank at (269) 491-3049 or visit their website at IndependentBank. com/KalamazooCountyTreasurer .

Those with incomes at or below 30% of the area median income . Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) programs use “area median incomes” calculated based on local family incomes, with adjustments for household size. Households whose incomes do not exceed 50% of the median area income , as determined by HUD, with adjustments for smaller and larger families.
Households whose combined income does not exceed 80% of the area median income . Middle Income & Workforce Housing Households with a combined income between 80% and 120% of the area median income . Often referred to as Workforce Housing when describing housing units rented or sold to households within this same income range.
Rent Limits & Income Limits Calculated annually using American Community Survey data and the Consumer Price Index . The 2025 AMI and Rent Limits are based on the 2024 ACS data. In general, housing for which the occupant(s) pays no more than 30% of gross monthly income for all housing costs including utilities .
