COA - Chromophobe and Oncocytic Tumor Alliance Current, Upcoming, and Past COA's initiatives focus on advancing chromophobe RCC research and enhancing support for patients and researchers in the field. No grant applications are currently open.
Chromophobe RCC Focus Awards - $25,000 The Kidney Cancer Association (KCA) and the Chromophobe and Oncocytic Tumor Alliance (COA) are partnering to offer two Chromophobe RCC Focus Awards of $25,000 each. Projects must investigate the distinct biological features and therapeutic vulnerabilities of chromophobe renal cell carcinoma, with the goal of advancing mechanistic understanding and informing future treatment strategies.
While the primary emphasis is on biological and translational research, applicants may optionally incorporate analyses of real-world data (RWD) or real-world evidence (RWE) when such data strengthen or contextualize the biological objectives of the proposed study.
Applications due by: April 20, 2026 Award recipients will be notified: September 2026 Eligibility, submission guidelines, review process and additional information are available through the grant submission portal. Submit questions to grants@kidneycancer.
org COA is gathering community feedback to understand what matters most to individuals affected by chromophobe RCC, including lifestyle and wellness factors such as how people use wearables and what kinds of research questions feel most urgent. This survey is for community planning and future program/grant planning (not a research study). Questions are optional.

Scholar in Training Award COA is excited to be a part of the kidney cancer collective, a group of nonprofits and foundations working together to advance research for kidney cancer by collaborating with the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) to fund a group of Scholar in Training Awards focused on kidney cancer. Chromophobe Patient Registry The Chromophobe Patient Registry is currently on hold while we work to collaborate with other groups and develop additional programs for patient participation. We encourage you to stay tuned for updates! You can still register your interest, and when opportunities to join a registry or contribute your data become available, we will notify you.
Your participation is valuable to advancing chromophobe RCC research. Our Second Year - 2024 Impact Report In our second year of operation, COA hit new milestones in advancing chromophobe renal cell carcinoma (chRCC) research and awareness.
A highlight of 2024 was awarding our first $75,000 co-funded research grant with the Kidney Cancer Association, supporting Dr. Elizabeth Ellis's groundbreaking work in targeted metabolic therapies at MD Anderson Cancer Center. We fostered new partnerships with nine cancer research organizations, including key affiliations with the International Kidney Cancer Coalition and the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR).
We also welcomed a new board member, Lindsay Walker, to our Board of Directors to help us continue to grow and advance chRCC research. Chromophobe RCC Focused Research Grant The chromophobe RCC focused research grant is $75,000 a grant in partnership with the Kidney Cancer Association (KCA) to fund research focused on chromophobe renal cell carcinoma (chRCC).
This grant helped fund research focused on chRCC with the goal of advancing research and improving outcomes for patients with this rare kidney cancer. The grant was open for applications in March of 2024 and the recipient was announced in October of 2024. The selected grantee was Dr. Elizabeth Ellis from MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Chromophobe Scholar in Training Award COA is excited to be a part of the kidney cancer collective, a group of nonprofits and foundations working together to advance research for kidney cancer by collaborating with the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) to fund a group of Scholar in Training Awards focused on kidney cancer. COA is proud to be supporting the chromophobe award in this inaugural year.
This award will help cover the travel costs for a young investigator to attend AACR's Annual Meeting, where they will share their research, network with AACR SITA awardees across cancer types, and be connected with other kidney cancer organizations to set them up with a network for success.
