KIC Consumer behaviour for a circular system transition is sponsored by Dutch Research Council (NWO). This programme aims to gain insight into effective interventions, measures, and strategies that promote circular consumer behaviour.

KIC Consumer behaviour for a circular system transition | NWO 08-07-2025: Correction of the budget form. Based on state-of-the-art research on system transitions, behavioural change and the circular economy, the aim of this Call for proposals is to gain insight into effective interventions, measures and strategies that promote circular consumer behaviour.

This Call for proposals focuses on research that analyses, designs and applies interventions. The interaction between system transitions and behavioural change is central to this. T he research programme focuses on the impactful product groups from the Transition Agenda Consumer Goods (TAC): furniture, household appliances, clothing & textiles and disposables & packaging.

Interventions around these product groups make the most impact in terms of circularity. Applications are submitted by a main applicant and one or more co-applicants. An application is prepared by a consortium, which includes other participants in addition to the applicants.

Four categories of participants in a consortium are distinguished: In this Call for proposals, two types of co-applicants are possible: 1) co-applicants affiliated to research organisations and 2) co-applicants affiliated to civil society organisations. Co-applicants linked to civil society organisations can only act as co-applicants under application of the de minimis regulation.

For this Call for proposals, NWO is organising two collaborative workshops on 11 and 30 June 2025 at Cultuuren Congrescentrum Antropia (next to Driebergen-Zeist station). The two collaborative workshops build on each other in terms of content. Participation in both workshops is mandatory for main applicants.

If necessary, it is possible to designate a substitute for this. More information can be found in the Call for proposals. The budget for this programme totals €7,000,000.

Applications can request a minimum of €1,750,000 and a maximum of €2,250,000 in NWO budget. The maximum duration of awarded projects is 6 years.

The mandatory collaborative workshops take place on June 11 and 30, 2025 The deadline for proposals is November 11th, 2025, before 14:00:00 CET Proposals will be assessed by the following four criteria: Problem definition and analysis (20%) Envisaged impact and route to impact (20%) Quality of the consortium (30%) Quality of the research (30%) The application procedure consists of the following steps: submission of the proposal; admissibility of the proposal; pre-advice assessment committee; interview selection (if necessary); assessment committee meeting; Responsible research data management is an essential component of good research practice.

Prepare a data management plan after the grant is awarded and before the project starts. Applications must be submitted through the Isaac application and reporting system. If you do not have an Isaac account yet, then please create one at least one workday in advance.

The following conditions for submission will be reviewed by NWO: the main applicant and co-applicant(s) meet the conditions stated in Section 3. 1; the main applicant must have attended both preparatory workshop days (Section 3. 3.

2) or, if this was not possible, they must have arranged for a colleague to attend on their behalf (Section 2. 3, 3. 3.

1 and 4. 2. 1); the applying consortium contains two or more co-funders; the application complies with the DORA guidelines as described in Section 4.

1; the application is submitted via the main applicant’s ISAAC account; the application is received before the deadline; the application is written in English; the proposed project has a duration of at most 6 years; the application budget of the proposal is drawn up in accordance with the conditions for this Call for proposals; the required co-funding has been, after any request for addition or change, correctly and fully committed through declarations co-funding (see Section 3.

6); all of the required annexes are, after a possible request to make additions or changes, complete and filled out according to the instructions. Mandatory consortium-building activities For this Call for proposals, NWO is organising two collaborative workshops on 11 and 30 June 2025 at Cultuuren Congrescentrum Antropia (next to Driebergen-Zeist station).

The workshops will bring together interested parties around the theme of the Call. Besides researchers at universities and colleges, representatives of social parties (public and private) are also expressly invited to these collaborative workshops. The expertise of the participants and their contributions to the desired impact on the Call theme form the basis for the conversation.

The workshops provide an opportunity to combine ideas and form broad innovative consortia that generate scientific and societal impact by connecting research and practice. The two collaborative workshops build on each other in terms of content. Participation in both workshops is mandatory for main applicants.
